Ryan Mathews to be this season's No. 1 RB?

HUH ???

Mathews 6'0" 218lbs

Forte 6'2" 218 lbs
Pederson 6'1" 217 lbs

MJD 5'7" 208 lbs

You should fire your research assistant
Size only matters, if you know how to use it. Matthews doesn't. MJD does. Peterson does.

1/2 of the guys you just stated as being "capable" of handling the large workload missed at least as many games as Matthews did last year.....

There simply is no "sure" thing when drafting RB's anymore. With defenses getting bigger and faster every year the injuries are going to happen, especially if there might be even the slightest hint of a concussion. Opportunity is the only truth that will color my judgement in terms of RB drafting, and in Matthews case he has a huge one.
I looked into this, as this caught me by surprise. You were somewhat correct. What I found also though, is Matthews really sucked big time in some major games.

Was it his fault, or the offense...I am not sure. But if LT2 could make it in this offense, and Matthews is all you are saying..why can't he?

Cause he can't. He sucks, and is injury prone. Again, they will regret letting Tolbert go...just like they regret letting Sproles go.

He was a top 10 RB last year and now he sucks? Also, I looked more into this supposed injury prone season he had last year.....he missed ONE game in the fantasy season....ONE! He sat of week 17, but most competitive leagues are smart enough to realize that 1/2 the league sits out week 17. Also, in ppr leagues, he only had 2 weeks of single digit production....AP had 3 for comparison sakes.

His offensive line has taken a beating recently, especially where McNeil and Dielman are concerned. Look what some healing did for Lynch's game. If I find a Matthews owner with your frame of thinking, I'll try to buy.

...and the Mathews hype continues.

From CBS sports:

There's a very real chance that Mathews leads the NFL in total yardage, and if he's getting the ball enough, he'll find ways to score. Don't hesitate to draft Mathews between fifth and 10th overall in every draft as a No. 1 rusher.

What this says to me is you should grab Curtis Brinkley as a late round flier.

No.....Friggen.....Way.

you heard hit here first, NO FRIGGEN WAY will he be the #1 Rb in this league. He is not that good, nor is he that durable. SD is about to learn that letting Tolbert go was a huge mistake. You heard it here first folks.
Once again, Phicinfan is wise, Phicinfan is all knowing. Be AFRAID those of you who question my knowledge.

So, now that Matthews is out with a broken clavicle.....any questions???

Hey - but he did get at least get half a preseason carry before he went down. Not sure how you could use that as evidence that he is injury prone.

Glass half full: Hey, the guy got through enough games and stayed in shape enough to get into college, have a fine college career, then get drafted in the first round.

Glass half empty: How did he do that?! Clearly he was born with hummingbird bones!

Re: Ryan Mathews (clavicle) to be this season's No. 1 RB?

Where does this guy rank in terms of how great an NFL career he could have? Is he a dude you would invest decent money in if you're in a dynasty?

Goes to show how much rotoworld.com knows....a writer is in the "expert" draft and picked Matthews at #2 over Rice and McCoy...

You mean he didn't anticipate the injury? Matthews will return In the first few games and can still have a fantastic season.

yeah, not sure i would call this a death blow. He's out 4-6 weeks with a an injury that should not have any long term recovery issues. So that gets him back in the week 1-3 area.

I wouldn't take Mathews as early as he's going or a little later. I don't trust him and defenses are going to zone in on that clavicle... They will probably even throw 10K on hit ;)

Well, i know that pro athletes get access to the best doctors and recovery tools, but I haven't read anywhere that has not said its a 4-6 week timeframe for healing with a sling, and a minimum 3 month total 100% recovery...I am not saying that he is going to be a bust, but this isn't a hamstring(ala Arian Foster) or a holdout...this is a serious injury. I would drop him to at least the late 2nd early 3rd....

Okay, how many of you have ever broken your collar bone??? I have, he won't be anywhere useful when he gets back. 6 weeks is a pipe dream folks.

But by all means, draft him high in round 1, and let me in those leagues....PLEASE

I think he'll be back weeks 4/6

from an FBG email
SD - RB Ryan Mathews may not play until Week 4

Source: North County Times - Scott Bair

If San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (shoulder) needs six weeks to recover from a broken clavicle, he probably won't return to the lineup until Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The injury problem hasn't changed head coach Norv Turner's opinion about Mathews for this year. 'I still expect him to have a great year,' Turner noted.

Bad news for the Chargers here. We expect Mathews ADP to take a tumble after fantasy owners respond to the injury news. If healthy he should get a sizable workload and could still be a star for your fantasy team in the all important fantasy playoffs. He's a nice value, but obviously comes with a risk

I don't think any of us recover as quickly as athletes with top flight medical care. He'll probably also have some titanium assistance.
