Palmer selling his house, ready to retire if not traded

Pete Carroll would be very interested in having his star QB pupil back. Palmer would buy him 3-4 seasons to find the future guy

Would you take a chance at him knowing J'Ville would have to trade some sort of draft pick for him plus pick up the rest of his contract which has 4 more years and a ton of money left on it?

For a second round pick, most definitly. Not a first rounder tho. Can't tell if his tank is half full or half empty the way he talks or has been playing recently. A change of scenary might do him good or it might not. I'm willing to take that chance. If all else fails there is always the chance of getting Luck next season. Money can be tossed around and finagled to make him affordable. I wouldn't throw all my money into one player tho like him.

IMO, he can just retire....no way I trade him....I am stubborn....

If he doesn't have the fire to play, he's not the leader I thought he could have been.

If Cam Newton continues to show the skills he did at today's workout, he may just be an interesting option at #4.

The Bengals will draft a QB this year I think in the top 3 rounds. See what happens with the CBA and Palmer and then once a new CBA is signed bring in a vet QB. Palmer can't play until the 2015 season unless the Bengals trade him.....I'd call his bluff, not like he's been all that the last couple years anyways, not much to lose in callign his bluff IMO.

I think you're on the right track Miller and I'm sick and tired of players trying to call the shots when they're signed, sealed, and delivered to multi-year contracts.

Maybe I just cut Palmer slack because the Bengals are so intentionally bad, but you are correct Mud. Im sure either of our fathers would have beat us senseless for going back on our word.

You do realize the Bengals have won 2 division titles in the last 6 years.....not setting the world on fire, but better than MANY other teams over that span as well. Palmer was as big of a reason for the Bengals troubles this past season as anyone else.....now I think he still has the potential to pull his shit together, but to demand out of the situation that he helped turn to shit after taking a shit ton of money and with 4 years left......sounds like a gutless quitter to me. He gets no slack IMO, sack up and start to perform up to your contract, then if the team still pulls him down, then he may have a leg to stand on.....but when you throw 20 INT's you may want to concentrate on your own woes before running for the hills. Palmer has managed to play a full season and throw under 18 INT's 3 times.....twice they won the division and made the playoffs....the other time they were a missed FG at the end of regulation from making the playoffs......yet 3 of the last 4 years he has thrown 20 INT's twice and sucked before getting hurt the other year. So not sure if it's the Bengals holding him down or Palmer holding the Bengals down....when he limits the gifts he tosses to the other team they actually win......whoda thunk!

Mud, I'm with ya, if the team was that bad, he should have considered that before signing a 100 mil + contract.......He had no problem playing for the Bengals when they front loaded his contract and was giving him 10's of millions in bonuses......You sign it, play for it!!! ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE SUCKING ANYWAYS!

The more this goes on, the more I kinda just want to see him retire.....

I like they way you guys are thinking. I still got a bad taste in my mouth from the Favre fiasco over the past few years and this has that drama written all over. Didnt really think about it til now but after reading above posts, i'm with ya on letting him retire and i'd even put a clause in it as he would have to stay retired for 2 maybe 3 years. And i wouldnt pay him either since he quit. No play, no pay.

Okay, moving on.

If "I" ran the Bengals....

I would let Carson go. Lets face it, this could be the chance to totally blow things up and rebuild this team in the mold of a REAL AFC North team. Defense has needs, but most would be fixed if injuries don't happen. Keep your Def. FAs including Jonathan Joseph and the back up Lbs. Draft another young DE and you are set.

On offense, you need to totally rebuild. Keep the C, LT, LG drop Williams the RG he is old. Move your high draft pick from RT to RG, and move in Collins at RT. You will need to draft some depth, but not a huge issue.

Then you draft a Rb, probably early 2nd round (Love the steam roller from Illinois....) if you resign Benson you STILL do this.

First round - I say you look for a young mobile Qb, cause until the O-line is fixed and gelled, he will need help. Newton may be that answer. Not a fan, but his mobility may win you a game or so.

Then you look for best Oline, Dline, Cb and Wr as you go.

I am half tempted to snag Green at WR in the first. A wr core of Shipley, Simpson, Green could be solid. Let Ocho go for more lower picks to fix Oline.

Yes, you probably suck this year. Maybe not, but you have a foundation to build with, and you axe the bad attitudes totally.

If he's really willing to retire.....then you can do all what you propose without trading the coward.....leaders want to step up and lead....not run for the hills.....

Let's face it, your not getting much at all for him. What, a 3rd rounder???? At best......screw it....let him sit.

Prepare for life without him, but you don't need the shitty compensation you will get from him trying to force himself out. Let him retire if that is what he wants to do.

As far as your plan...

Not sure what you think the issue with Williams is, from watching the games, he sure doesn't seem to be a glaring weakness. Solid vet and good locker room guy. Cincy needs more guys like that not less. Collins has shown flashes, but not consistent enough for me to think he's the future. Need to kick Smith in the ass and get him ready to be your RT, if he can't be your RT, he's not going to be your RG.....it's effort and self-discipline with him not talent. Position change is not going to help.

Not sure you need to spend that high of a pick on a RB in today's NFL. There is enough talent out there on the cheap IMO that can be productive and enough other needs to spend a high pick on a RB.

With ya on the QB.....and wasn't a big Newton fan, but from the reports I heard on the workout and the fact that he is doing a workout this early, I was impressed. He's built like a fast Big Ben......big, fast, and a load to bring down. If he can throw at all he could be scary.

As far as Green, if ya don't go QB in the first, he's a good possibility. And yeah, ocho can go for all I care now.

As far as sucking......team still is not that far off. If Palmer would just concentrate on getting better the team could have had a nice bounce back, but he just doesn't seem to have the fire that is needed so they need to find someone that does......man, I would love to find a way to pry Kolb from Philly.

Okay, moving on.

cbssports.com,
The Bengals are "kicking the tires on all kinds of options" after finally taking Carson Palmer's threat to retire if not traded seriously. The official team website reports that the Bengals will do their due diligence on the rookie quarterbacks at the NFL combine, but they will also aim to have Palmer return happy because they feel like he gives the team "their best chance to win." Palmer requested a trade in late January and was flatly denied by team owner Mike Brown.

The writer goes on to say that he'd be surprised if Palmer is not with the Bengals next season.

According to Dennis Janson of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, Carson Palmer recently told a friend that he will "never set foot in Paul Brown Stadium again."
"I have $80 million in the bank," Palmer added. "I don't have to play football for money. I'll play it for the love of the game but that would have to be elsewhere. I'm prepared to live my life." Palmer is obviously serious about walking away, and all indications out of Cincinnati suggest the Bengals have softened their stance on a potential trade. We wouldn't take Palmer's Paul Brown Stadium threat literally. He'd have to play there as a visitor in 2011, for instance, if traded to the Cardinals or 49ers.

I would take it seriously.

Interesting to think of him playing for the Niners. Hardly watched him this year, so no eyeball test to gauge if he would be a good fit or a significant improvement over Alex Smith. With the potential of a lockout until September, a vet would be desirable over a rookie QB. If the price is right (3rd or lower) , I would like to see them grab Palmer and draft Gabbert (unless Peterson or Miller fall to 7).

Don Banks of SI has stated in his Monday Morning Qb that he has talked to one source from Cincinnati that says once the CBA is in place, they WILL listent to offers for Carson. Also, Lewis in his interview at the combine came out straight and said they are planning on not having Carson and taking him for his word(same stance he took with Chad, and Chad folded....).

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback coach Ken Zampese was in attendance for Delaware QB Pat Devlin's Pro Day Tuesday, March 15, and asked him to do some specific throws during his workout, reports Joe Reedy, of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Zampese met with Devlin before the workout to go over plays and formations.

here is my firm belief on this.

1) Palmer will NOT be traded this year. Period. He may retire, he may hold out, but if he plays THIS year, he will be a Bengal.
2) Cincinnati WILL take a Qb in this draft. My gut says it won't be first round, if there I could see Mallett in the 2nd or someone later.
3) Then next year Palmer will get dealt if he did play(ala Boomer Essiason.

The only hedge i have in this ....is Gabbert. The more I see, the more I like, but he won't make it past Washington or Tenn. So if they really like him, he has to be the #4 pick.

Christian Ponder gets extra attention from Bengals on Pro Day

Christian Ponder

Carson Palmer is on the way out of Cincinnati; the only question is whether it will be this year or next year.

Either way, the Bengals need to find a new young quarterback for offensive coordinator Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense. On Wednesday, coach Marvin Lewis and Gruden were in attendance at Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder’s Pro Day. (So was Isaac Bruce of all people, catching passes.) Lewis was the only head coach there.

Ponder is seen as a rising player in the draft, and best fits West Coast teams like the Bengals or Seahawks. Ponder’s former coach Jimbo Fisher says Ponder’s arm looks “like it was as a junior” before injuries struck. Gruden agrees.

“With Christian, especially with the issues he had with his arm and his elbow, we just want to see that he’s spinning it and that he’s been working,” Gruden said via the Tallahassee Democrat. “You want to see what kind of velocity he has on the ball and his accuracy”

Mike Mayock said Wednesday Ponder showed off “more than adequate arm strength” and “did really well” at the session. Ponder said he has nine private workouts scheduled.

At this point, the Bengals may have to trade up from their second round pick if the want to land Ponder.
