I think Ryan makes a decent starter for fantasy purposes this year. I certainly can't name 12 QBs who I feel have opportunity to outperform him.

1. Brees
2. Brady
3. Peyton
4. Rivers
5. Rodgers
6. McNabb
7. Warner
8. Schaub
9. Palmer
10. This is the lowest I can possibly see myself putting Ryan. I really feel he is pretty even with the last 2 mentioned.
In no specific order, QB's I'll take over Ryan:
Brees, Brady, Manning, Warner, Romo, McNabb, Cutler, Palmer, Roeth, Hasselbeck, Schaub.

That puts him 12th for me, right in the same area with Cassell, Eli, Orton, Delhomme....and that is why I won't have him this year, the Matty Ice Love will drive him much higher that I value him.

I forgot Romo.

I know many people don't agree with my gorilla fantasy projections, but I'll re-state them anyways.

If Roddy is a top 10 WR and Gonzo is a top 3 TE, then how is Ryan not a top 6-10 QB?

Add the numbers up. Someone has to be throwing for all those yards and TDs.

This was the same theory I applied to the Arizona situation last year. If there are 2 top fantasy targets in the passing game then realistically the QB should be a high target as well.

That is if you feel that is the case. I think the offense change will decrease Gonzo's numbers quite a bit. Not sure, but when my rankings come out Gonzo might not be a top 3 TE for me.....

I just don't see this offense turning into a pass happy offense when they are one of the better running teams in the league....

So let's say for the sake of argument that White and Gonzalez live up to projections and garner 2200 yards and 15 TD's (fair?). Where does the other 1500 yards and 6'ish TD's come from that make Ryan a slamdunk weekly starter? I think we can agree the backfield won't be providing that, and I'm sorry but Jenkins has had enough time in the league now as a figurative starter that his baseline is pretty established.

Keep in mind that although this kid had an extremely awesome debut season, he's still a 2nd year QB and his upside is unknown. I'll maintain that he's a guy I would draft at a value spot (this year), but if he's my first Qb drafted, I'm taking one of the others listed very soon afterwards and playing matchups. Ryan would likely get the lion's share of my starting nods, but I can't elevate him to "fire and forget" status yet.

RBs are still going to get about 300-400 yards even in a situation like Atlanta's. The WR2 is probably also due for about 500, with the WR3 and WR4 both likely to pull in around 200-300 a piece. That is VERY roughly about 3400 yards, with the TD numbers too hard for me to calculate.

Ok, so after checking out some mocks and leafing through a few magazines to go along with my eyeball test, this is my assessment of Ryan for 2009.

In a typical 12-team single season league, I cherish that #12 swing pick but I also like picking smack in the middle. If the latter scenario played out, I would load up on RB/WR/TE with my first 5 picks, then go back-to-back with something like Ryan/Cassel in the 6th and 7th. I just can't see more than about 3600 and 20 TD's from him this year, and that to me is not a guy I draft and leave in for 17 weeks. He's the exact type of QB that I would always be trying to package in a deal to get someone better.

Deeper leagues or Dynasties are a whole different ballgame because of positional scarcity and future upside potential, respectively.

I see... so you're not real hot on the black birds this year. Middle of the road Ryan with a decent WR corps, IYO. We'll see how ya feel about this next year.

Take a look at Qb's 9-15 here, and rank them. There are quite a few decisions that have to be made if you wait too long for your Qb, and are faced with one of these guys as your #1. I feel Ryan at least offers the safe side of the coin in these decisions. He might not bring you the upside of some of these guys, but he also won't bring you the possible downside the others bring.
I have them:
9. Cutler
10. Big Ben
10. Ryan
12. Schaub
13. Palmer
13. Hass
15. Cassell
For the most, part if you wait too long to draft a QB you'll likely be looking at 2 of these guys.

Editted to say I would not include Cassell this high on my list. This was taking those pivotal 9-15 guys from one of our major ADP sites.

Ryan is NOT a top 5 QB. Top 10 maybe. Give the boy a chance to prove himself this year then that should be a decent guage of how good he is and can be.
