Well, I know he doesn't quite live up to Da Bomb's high standards, but the President of NBC Sports Dick Ebersol called him the greatest sports announcer ever, and Madden did win 16 emmy's as the top sports personality/announcer.

Thought he did a pretty great job on Super Bowl 43. Nice game to go out on.

Maybe Madden takes over the Raiders franchise. Or at least goes there as a consultant.

Many people here are too young to remember John Madden's antics and meltdowns on the sidelines. He intimidated referees and opponents. His record as a coach shows that he was able to transfer his passion for the game and knowledge to his players. He got them to play as an "us against them" unit. He backed them everytime. Had he decided to continue in coaching, he would have been a Hall of Fame coach.
I don't watch much football, but it was always nice to know that when I wanted to, John Madden was there to give his commentary.
Chris Collinsworth is articulate and should be able to keep the fans' interest, but no one will replace Madden.

I make the over/under for Al Michaels to stab Chris Collingsworth in the neck with a ballpoint pen 7 games.
I look for Al to reference this line as the game between the Eagles at the Redskins winds down into over/under time.

"And for those of you still watching, this is the game where I will or won't stab Chris in the neck. What? He was just here! Looks like Chris can't wait for the fat lady and is going to meet us in The Big Easy."

Tough Jack on the Madden dis.

John is just as Sweet as Walter. One knee equals two feet.

the Game owes him so much. And the 'fans' who disrespect him, aren't.

I'm with Duk. and down, so very down, with Madden passing.

"The receiver can't catch the ball if the quarterback doesn't throw it to him."
"What they want to do on this play is get the ball into the end zone."
"If the running back doesn't find the gap, he can't get through."
"Boom!"

Good riddance.

John Maddens' career spanned 3 generations. The oldest generation saw John Madden the Coach of the Raiders. One of the greatest coaches of his era. His intensity and prepartion is what Made the Raiders a force to be reconded with. The teams always had talent but madden the coach was always able to push that talent to levels of performance that made The Raiders one of the most feared teams on your schedule each year.

The Next Generation got to hear John Madden the broadcaster. As a broadcaster he expanded football as much as any other factor. He brought us football in a way not many sportscasters did. He brought his energy and passion of the game to us. He also brought us xs and os like no broadcaster had before. He talked about what the linemen were doing when it had not been done before. He talked about zone defenses when it wasn't done before. He showed us how WRs used pick moves when no one else had before. He taught a huge audience to appreciate football on a level that only people who had actually played football before enjoyed while watching. As Dukdown pointed out he won a lot of Sportscaster awards and about 1/2 them was for doing this type of sportscasting that brought knowledge of the game to the masses when it wasn't done before.

Now the ohter 1/2 of those sportscasting awards were for John Madden "The ICON" as Mike called him. The third generation got Madden the Icon, revered and respected but the Madden that was Mr. "state the obvious guy". It's too bad the latest generation only got to see that Madden. He was amazing for those first two generations.

That had to be great times. There were good teams but the Raiders were probably the most feared team. The schedule comes out and you look at each game and try to project wins and loses as we all do. It was Oh Crap! We have to play the Raiders. They were the definition of Play Big In Big Games!!

Lomonika, Blitnikoff...................I know I minced the spellings....but those were some good teams. John is the perfect example of someone getting out on top, and staying out. He then parlayed that into a complete different career, and he will be a two time HOH'er.

My personal favorite commentary of his, is when he talked about the sweat lines on the pants and jersey's and explained that the harder you worked the more you sweat! lol! really? ....and the 350 lbs. was just a minor factor. That and the infamous "Pickle Juice" :thrash:

Those years were great, I remember the local bay area news paper sports section headlines saying "Oakland Raiders, Hells Angles In Cleats" The NFL will never be the same as it was back in the 70s, those players thru out the NFL played for the love of the game and would play an entire career with one team. All the new rules and huge saleries have all but ruined the game IMO
Ah the memories
