Jets RB Thomas Jones Softening Stance?

2. Wasn't Jones drafted at 19? It is not so surprising a kid is going to take some time to transition to the NFL.

This isn't the NBA.....you have to be 3 years removed from HS to be drafted in the NFL. Jones was born in 1978 and drafted in 2000....makes him 22, same age as most draft picks.

22? You sure? Just seem to recall him being younger than some of the rookies that came out 1-2 years after he entered the league.

Gotta agree with the basic premise of Miller's original comment. Jones realizes he better get this butt to camp or he could be replaced.............

Jones was one of the better paid backs the past 2 years and considering how he did last year he simply thought that should continue. Who is going to replace him this year? He showed up to play because if Washington proves he can carry the team (big if) Jones won't be back due to the roster bonus and needs to begin his audition now. If NY doesn't renegotiate now it faces an uncertain future at the position.

By renegotiating, that does not mean the Jets should continue paying what they have over the past 2 years but more than the $900,000 he is currently scheduled to earn is still very reasonable. 1+ million (how + would be the sticking point wouldn't it?) could still be dirt cheap for what he is still bringing to the table.

I could see the hulabaloo over Jones wanting to renegotiate if contracts where honored by both sides - they are not and next year it will be the Jets terminating the contract becausae of the short-sightedness they are displaying now.

Renegotiation is one thing. Expecting a huge check is another. Lets face facts here...yes Jones had one heck of a year last year...but he is on the wrong side of 30 and has alot of mileage on him. Add to that they just brought in a young bruiser for the future in Greene...and have Washington ready to take more carries and be better used this year....and Jones' numbers will drop. I am not saying he should not be kept...but in the NFL running back is an easy fix anymore.

New York Newsday's Bob Glauber reports the Jets are not inclined to give RB Thomas Jones any more money, mostly because he has two years left on the deal, he has already collected nearly 2/3 of the contract and that the team doesn't want to set a precedent for other players.

Jones really doesn't have much for legs to stand on in all of this. Right now, Washington's hold out is his only leverage, and that is only because of body count at the position.

Our view: Both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington want new contracts, and now both have returned to OTAs even though neither one has a new deal. This is the last week of voluntary workouts, and next week the Jets switch to mandatory full-squad minicamp.

ESPN reports RB Leon Washington, who had been absent from the New York Jets' workouts for three weeks because he is seeking a new contract, reported on Monday morning, his agent confirmed on Twitter. "Leon is excited about finishing the off-season program off strong and is very much 'hopeful' that we can come to terms on a fair market deal," agent Alvin Keels wrote on Twitter. It is unclear why Washington decided to end his offseason boycott. Washington is due to earn $535,000 this season, the final year of his rookie deal. He's believed to be looking for about $6 million a year, similar to deals that Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew and San Diego RB Darren Sproles -- players he's often compared to -- have received. Washington led the NFL with 2,337 all-purpose yards in 2008 and scored nine touchdowns. The Jets' first mandatory minicamp is scheduled for June 9-11.

Quite honestly...I think they should.

First and foremost, I don't see the Jets doing well at all this year. Not with a rookie qb, or a failed rookie Qb (Clemmens).

Secondly, his value won't get higher. NYJ could continue to add to the team and fix other issues with more picks....and cut salary at same time.

Lastly....I just don't have faith that Jones can continue on at this pace. Just gut feeling...but too much history to ignore.
