Frank Gore: 2012 Bust

It seems that almost everyday we read a story about the decline of Michael Turner and as a Turner owner I'll admit that his numbers were ugly towards the end of last season. Turner however does score TD's and that's his saving grace.

But let's take a peak at the Left Coast former stud FRank Gore. Once and only once in the second half of last season did he average over 4.0 ypc in a game. In the final 8 games last year Frank's ypc average nose dived to a pityful 3.2. But he excels in the receiving game you might say but you'd be wrong as far as the last half of 2011. Might I remind you that LaMichael James has arrived in the Bay City and IMO he'll become the receiving back rather quickly in San Fran. Goal line carries aren't likely to save the owners of Gore from a year of gloom and doom either. Shhh, lest you forget Brandon Jacobs now calls Frisco home. Oh and there's Kendall Hunter waiting in the wings. Draft Frank as many times as you wish at his current ADP of early 4th but remember you heard it here, you'll regret it.

I agree with the backfield they have now it seems they are worried about Gore carrying too much of a load this season. I'd be afraid to have him on my fantasy team at all honestly,

If you skip Gore at his projected ADP your next 3 choices are Doug Martin, Reggie Bush and Isaac Redmond.

I'd call it a tie.

Wasn't his Bust year kinda last year?? He was a first round pick or early 2nd at the latest and he finished outside of the top 15. He is not the back he used to be.

Bust for a 1st round, yes.

Will he be a bust in the 4th as an RB2?

Like I said, look at your options.

Last year he went late 2nd in both redrafts I did. Pretty solid production with 1200 yards rushing and 8 TDs. Not great but hardly a bust season. Harbaugh pulled in the reins on him late in the season to keep him fresh. Claimed it was an ankle injury, which Gore denied. Gore wanted to play. Good decision by Harbaugh from a team standpoint. He still ended up 6th in total rush yards and 11th in standard scoring. The most confusing part of his season to me as a Niner fan was the lack of receptions. First time since his rookie year that he was under 40 receptions. Not like Hunter took all the action as he only caught 16 himself. They just didn't throw to the backs last year, which was something Harbaugh said would be a big part of their passing game when he took over.

Anyway, I like Gore at his current ADP in round 4 . Don't think he will lose as many carries as people think.

I agree with Efactor, if I can get him in the 4th, or later....then yes I will nail him. I am wondering if they won't expand the passing game more with A.Smith having a full year under his belt. Plus the added tools in San Fran. That will only take more from Gore. But on a plus side, it may shut up Vernon Davis.

Gore is a good pass catcher and a good pass blocker. That might keep him on the field more then people think.

Very good point about the pass blocking in particular.

The guy is still a very good player in all facets of the game, so I think he has another solid year or two in him. I still see 275 or so touches out of him this year.........

Last year Gore caught a whopping 17 passes for a mere 114 yards and zero scores. You guys are remembering the Gore of yesteryear. Gore led me to my first fantasy title, many years ago but he's being fazed out, pure and simple. IMO of course.

Compare that to Turner who last year was in the top 3 of RB's graded for their pass blocking. Turner caught 17 passes for 168 yards and no scores. Turner, you might note is considered a very bad pass catching RB yet his numbers are better than Gore's and his pass protection last year was much, much better.

Phased out? He had 283 carries in 2011, which was the 2nd highest in his career despite Harbaugh putting on the brakes for a few games. Hunter was next with 112. It's called sharing the load.

The lack of receptions was perplexing. A career low, but no RBs were involved with the passing game so not a matter of "phasing him out".

No RB is the same back at 29 that they are at 25 but he is still the best, most complete back on the roster and will get enough touches to have a solid season in 2012.

You're way off base on this one.................

I know E is a homer but he's making good sense.

I like Gore where he's being drafted but I think his ADP will go up as the season approaches.

It's not a matter of being a homer as far as my opinion of Gores role. As a fan, I could care less who plays what role as long as they win. In fact, I'm excited about the role LaMichael James will play. Not of the opinion that Hunter is anything special, so I think James takes touches away from Hunter more than Gore.

Just pointing out the flaws in this post. Gore is still a fine player who is good in all facets of the RB role. He won't take a big hit in production this year (in fact I think he gets back in the 40 range for receptions with the new down field threats opening up the short stuff) and if you can grab him in the 4th as RB 2, I think he will be an excellent value.

Phased out as in the stats plainly show they aren't throwing the ball to him. His pass blocking skills aren't what they once were and his ypc average wasn't anything to sing about last season. One thing for sure "E", at the end of this season one of us will be right and the other wrong. I stand by my call for Gore to be a bust this year. It'll be many months before we know who's right. When Turner beats you in the receiving game it can't be a good thing.

How do you know his pass blocking skills have diminished? I watched every game last year and he was still excellent in blitz pick up and overall protection. You're really reaching now.

Gore 4.3
Foster 4.4
Jackson 4.4
Turner 4.5
Lynch 4.2.
C Johnson 4.0

You're right, not great but equal to many of the top rated backs in the league .

So you're only real tangible argument is number of receptions. I say the 17 last year was an anomaly. They didn't throw to the RBs much last year. Any RB, so more a strategy than a reflection of his receiving ability.

He'll be solid again in 2012, especially where he can be drafted................

Your excellent pass blocker didn't place in the top 10 last year "E. when grades were handed out to RB's for their pass blocking efficiency. Here's the best RB's at pass blocking from last season.

Rank Name Team Pass Block Snaps Total Pressure Allowed PBE
1 Fred Jackson BUF........83 .................0................... 100.0
2 Michael Turner ATL 72 1 99.0
3 Jason Snelling ATL.......57................. 1.................... 98.2
4 Roy Helu WAS ............78................. 2.................... 98.1
5 Donald Brown IND .......68................. 2.................... 97.8
6 Dexter McCluster KC ....65................. 2.................... 97.7
7 Jackie Battle KC ..........64................. 2................... 97.7
8 James Starks GB .........71................. 2................... 97.5
9 Ahmad Bradshaw NYG ..105............... 4.................... 97.1
10 LeGarrette Blount TB ..58................ 2.................... 97.0

Then there's Gore way down the list.
Frank Gore....................138............2 sacks & 8 hurries for 10 total pressures allowed.

Only McCoy, Stewart, and Lumpkin allowed more pressures on the QB than Gore. Of those 3 only Lumpkin gave up more sacks to his QB than Gore.
