Cutler in Chicago??

I think there is a definite chance that he falls farther than he did in drafts last year, and I will be buying if that be the case. I realize that he won't have Marshall and Royal, but he does have a receiver that he has chemistry with from College, that being Bennett. He has a wideout/speedster that is gonna be one year better and can stretch the field in Hester. I feel his main TE, and Rb targets are better in Olsen and Forte. He is on a defense that will get him the ball back quicker. I will be watching his ADP closely.

...........and Orgazmo....he throws the ball far to hard and long to catch it himself many times. Now if he had a weaker armed Qb like Elway he might catch a few more.

I agree the perception of his situation is likely to drop him, and I wouldn't be afraid to draft him, but even then my expectations are tempered.

But one thing to consider is Shannie gave him a whole lot of freedom out there. Combine that with an ailing RB situation plus a great pass protecting offensive line and you have a formula for great numbers.

In Chicago they have a bell cow back, mediocre offensive line, and no real go to receiver beyond Olsen. The coaching staff has also never struck me as having an air-it-out philosophy.

In the end, Cutler might produce Rivers 2007 type numbers. Not a bad mid draft pick with the likes of Eli and Shaub.

I'll have to respectfully disagree on the line assessment. They did pretty well springing Forte last year, and they brought in Pace to pair with last year's first round Tackle Chris Williams. Williams didn't give much last year due to being dinged up, so he's almost like having another addition. Not saying they're tops in the league, but I rate them higher than mediocre.

Cutler has the talent to make average WR's better. He could turn someone unexpected into a go-to type. (See: Welker, Wes)

Lovie's coaching staff didn't have much choice on their philosophy when they were working with the likes of Grossman and Orton. Now they have a guy who can open up their playbook.

The tackles are certainly better - when healthy.

I think an upside of Shaub or Rivers and floor of Eli in my post is very reasonable even with the things you pointed out, so I'm not sure where you rank him or figure his production will be. If you can get him in the 7th or 8th round he should be a nice value.

In a redraft, I would say that's a realistic tier. I'd personally take him after McNabb was off the board, just ahead of Eli and Schaub. Rivers vs. Cutler vs. Aaron Rodgers seems to be a dead heat to me. I'd be comfortable with either of those guys.
In a keeper/dynasty, I'd be inclined to take Cutler over those 4. After he masters the offense and his WR's develop he could get back to Denver-type production.

Eli losing Plax and Ward, and Schaub's durability present a bit of doubt for me when looking at these guys.

That's he is a great value in the same neighborhood. And in dynasty I'd definitely take him higher, as the team's likely to get him the ammo he needs.

This is a very good analysis of the Cutler situation IMO, would be wise for all to do the same.

Interesting dilema for teams, with the status of the collective bargaining agreement and salary cap both up in the air, so to speak.

  • -- Bears Considering Extension for Cutler --
    Tue May 19, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Bears, who are $20.8 million under the salary cap, are in good position to offer QB Jay Cutler a huge extension. Cutler is currently signed through 2011. The Bears view Cutler as a 10-year solution. Cutler is due a $12 million roster bonus in 2011. In an extension, the Bears could hand him a roster bonus of $10 million or $12 million this season and take advantage of the space available. That's, of course, if the organization believes there will be a salary cap moving forward.

  • -- Bears Begin Transition to Cutler --
    Wed May 20, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • AP reports after trying to catch a few of QB Jay Cutler's passes in practice Wednesday, Chicago Bears WR Rashied Davis knew the team's offense will look different this season. A pass from Cutler "comes fast and it's on you real quick," Davis said. "Once you get used to running routes with him and catching the ball from him, it gets a little bit easier," Davis said. "But he throws the ball pretty hard and the heat is still on the ball 20 yards down the field." The Bears began the transition to their new quarterback when organized team activities started at Halas Hall with a healthy dose of passing drills, seven-on-seven and full-squad, non-contact scrimmaging. Several receivers had to adjust to Cutler's arm, including TE Greg Olsen, who had trouble hanging on to one throw, and WR Devin Hester, who dropped a short screen pass. "We've got a lot of young receivers and they've got to get used to the way I throw the ball," Cutler said. "I thought Day 1 looked good." No one complained, especially OC Ron Turner. "Just his arm strength, I've never been around anything like that before," Turner said. "And he's shown very good accuracy the little bit I've been around him."
