Former University of Texas football player Cedric Benson was arrested and charged
with assault with injury early today after an incident last month at Annie’s West
at 706 West Sixth Street, where officials said he punched a bar employee in the
face.

The 27-year-old current running back for the Cincinnati Bengals had been involved
in an altercation at the establishment and was being escorted out when he punched
an employee, according to an arrest affidavit.

Benson has posted bail and has been released from the Travis County Jail, according
to jail records and officials.

He faces up to a year in jail if convicted of the Class A misdemeanor.

(Rotoworld) According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Cedric Benson claims he did reach out to the NFL office and Bengals to inform them of events in an Austin (TX) bar that led up to Tuesday's assault charge. Analysis: According to Schefter, Benson had no idea he'd be charged with the Class A misdemeanor, so he might not have taken the situation seriously. Via attorney David Cornwell, Benson has publicly contended that he was the victim, not the person(s) he allegedly assaulted. Schefter noted that Benson has a history of off-field problems, but didn't predict what will come of this.

Benson is an idiot, keep yourself out of these situations......and stay out of AUSTIN! Seems like all his issues are there.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that a league source familiar with Benson's case says that it is "very minor." Benson was arrested Tuesday and charged with misdemeanor assault for allegedly punching a bar employee in the face on May 30. Analysis: We'll have to see how this plays out, but Benson's version of the story is that he was punched by a man who didn't like the fact that the running back was posing for photographs with a group of women, the National Football Post reports. In any case, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league is looking into the matter and more info is sure to follow on this front in the coming days.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson says he was punched by a man who took exception to him posing for photographs with a group of women, reports NationalFootballPost.com's Aaron Wilson, citing lawyer David Cornwell. Cornwell said in a statement, "Late last month at a nightclub, Cedric Benson was asked to take pictures with some female fans. A man approached Cedric and objected to him posing for pictures with the women. Cedric explained that he had been asked to pose with the women and the man punched Cedric. An altercation followed and while Cedric was leaving the club, he was approached by another man aggressively. Believing this man was a friend of the man who had punched him; Cedric attempted to protect himself and continued out of the club. Immediately upon leaving the club, Cedric called the police. He was interviewed by the police and left the area. Two weeks ago while he was in Cincinnati, Cedric was contacted by a detective investigating the incident in Texas. Apparently, the second man who approached Cedric is an employee of the night club and claimed that Cedric punched him."

As the facts in the case start to come out It is looking more and more like this is indeed a minor incident. That said, still needs to watch the situations he puts himself in and I would not be in a rush to resign him if I am Cincy. Run him 350 times this year and go from there.

"Its An Outrage"
What a nice thought. Naive but nice............:xpopcorn:

Whats so naive about me thinking that if you go out act like an adult instead of a neanderthal, especially when your in a high profile profession and under the watchful eye of the media.

I will settle for wishful thinking

Yes. No need to rush into giving him a contract. He needs motivation to run as good as he did last year. Give him a fat contract and I fear he will get lazy.

Do Cincinnati Police Target Pro Athletes? --
Thu Jul 1, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
ESPN’s Ric Bucher suggested yesterday that the recent run of Bengals arrests could be partially attributed to unfair treatment from Cincinnati Police. Said Bucher, a Cincinnati native who covers the NBA for ESPN: “The reputation that the Bengals have is, I believe — there are extenuating circumstances there. The relationship in Cincinnati between the police and the professional athletes is challenging, I would say. I believe there is a little bit of targeting that goes on there.” Bucher said that in regards to RB Cedric Benson, his argument wasn’t valid. Cincinnati Enquirer’s Joe Reedy researched the numbers and found that Bucher’s entire argument isn’t valid. Of the 21 arrests since 2005, four have been by Cincinnati Police, which doesn’t seem to indicate a pattern of profiling. Of the remaining 17, six were outside of Greater Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky, three were by the Ohio Highway Patrol, three were in Covington, two in Boone County, and one each by Newport, Taylor Mill and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife (the Eric Steinbach boating incident). Reedy reached Bucher and he explained his remarks, which he said was more about the general area than Cincinnati Police specifically. In that respect, Bucher does get some leeway since 15 of 21 were in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

Bodily Injury under Texas law is basically anything that leaves a mark or causes pain. Lots of people get arrested for Assault, and most get probation or time served.

Benson has nothing to worry about. He paid the right people last time to get his intoxication charges taken care of in a manner totally inconsistent with standard procedures here in Texas, and Im sure this will be taken care of monitarily in much the same fashion. Travis County is notorious for inconsistent treatment and lax prosecution.

  • -- Brian Leonard Draws Comparisons to John Riggins --
    Tue Jul 6, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Dayton Daily News reports Cincinnati Bengals RB Brian Leonard will see more action if RB Cedric Benson is suspended for his latest arrest in Texas last week. “I feel like I can do anything,” said Leonard, who reminds some of a young RB John Riggins, the Hall of Fame back who starred for the Jets and Redskins. “The coaches believe I can do it and feel comfortable with me at any position. My reps have increased, and I’m expected to be more involved in the offense. I’m a team player and will do whatever is asked of me.” The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Leonard returned to his college alma mater Rutgers after minicamp to prepare for training camp. The running back is doing some speed training to show more quickness out of the backfield, and route running. Leonard shed a few pounds this offseason but still maintains the size to take on larger defenders when lead blocking and protecting the quarterback. After a 30-catch season in 2009, Leonard is expected to be an integral part of the passing game. “Brian has a key role in our offense,” running backs coach Jim Anderson said. “He’s a guy that you don’t want to paint into a corner. He did a tremendous job for us on third down. But yet when we called for him to play on first and second downs he can do that as well. He has a tremendous amount of versatility and he can add to our offense. We’re counting on him to play at an even higher level this season.” Leonard is playing in the final year of his rookie contract and is a guy the team obviously holds in high regard. That being said, there has been no dialogue between the Bengals and representatives for Leonard regarding a contract extension. He’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. The Riggins comparisons have resulted from Leonard’s rugged running style. Could he be the second coming of “The Diesel” in the Bengals offense? “I’m my own person but do share some of the same similarities as Riggins,” Leonard said. “He was a hard runner and had good hands out of the backfield. That’s what I feel like I do, make one cut and get up field, break a few arm tackles and make a couple of guys miss. That’s me. Hopefully, this is a breakout year for me.” Leonard said he watched a lot of film on Riggins in college and patterned his game after the legendary back. Those are some big shoes to fill for anyone, but the Bengals coaching staff believes in the running back’s ability. “You don’t want to compare a guy until it’s over and then you write the final chapter,” Anderson said. “But right now, if he wants to be John Riggins then that’s good with me. Riggins was one tough guy, and Brian Leonard is one tough guy. You put those two together and we have something. I think Brian is a little more versatile than John catching the ball. We’re looking for big things out of Brian this season.”

Does he remind any of you of Riggins?? Benard Scott will have more impact if benson gets gigged.
