The official team website for the Bengals reports that RB Cedric Benson met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in New York on Thursday about the assault charge in Austin, Texas. David Cornwell, the lawyer for Benson, said that he's not sure if Goodell will make a call about a possible suspension before the season or wait to see if the case is resolved in court. "The commissioner and Cedric had a frank and productive discussion regarding the benefits of playing in the NFL as well as the price to enjoy those benefits," Cornwell said. "Cedric is his best advocate, and I believe the commissioner was pleased with their discussion." Prior to the meeting with Goodell, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he did not expect Benson to be suspended. Lewis said earlier this week that Benson was "jumped" and "sucker-punched" during the incident in Texas.
Analysis: We agree with Lewis that Benson will likely avoid being suspended, but we'll wait to see what Goodell decides. If Benson is able to play in all 16 games, we consider him to be a No. 1 Fantasy option. Benson has the chance to build off last year's breakout season. He ran for a career-best 1,251 rushing yards in 2009, and he should do well again in 2010 with no competition for carries. He also has the motivation of a new contract, and Benson is worth drafting as early as Round 2 in all leagues.
