Will the Lions select an Offensive Tackle in the first round?

PewterReport.com reports there is a chance the Detroit Lions could select Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft in order to help protect QB Matthew Stafford.
While Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy are outstanding ballplayers the Lions have a big investment in the young QB Stafford. Either way, I think it is a win win situation for the Lions and getting an OT could make for a healthier Stafford and a more productive O. Calvin Johnson will get his regardless but you may have to bump him up a slot or two on your draft board. but Kevin Smith, Pettigrew and Burleson could gain a little bit of a fantasy boost. If the Lions do OT early it could really upset the draft projections as the recent trend to trade up for OTs early in the draft will get a jump start.

I doubt it...........

I think they take Suh. If so, I would expect them to take Rodger Saffold from Indiana with their 2nd rounder, assuming he is available. They say he is an excellent pass protector and I like the combination of Suh/Saffold better than Okung/whomever.

hmmm....... I like Suh/McCoy @ 2, but Okung is almost a safe bet 10 year franchise OT...

I go to Pewter Report for all my insider Lions info.. :)

The list of offensive linemen who contributed well last year that they should've either taken instead of Pettigrew (#20) and Delmas (#33) include Michael Oher, Alex Mack, Eric Wood, Eben Britten, and Max Unger.

They took one lineman in 2009, in the 7th round. I have them going DT/CB with their first 2 picks this year, then aggressively addressing the line with their 3rd-5th round selections.

I think you will eventually have to admit that Detroit did well with both the Petti and Delmas picks. For them to take a serious step toward rebuilding last year needed D help was a must. They had a nice LB corps so the question was DL or DB. Delmas panned out nicely.

Petti was a pick that surprised me but by no means was one I was disappointed with. He has the potential of being something special.

The OL needed and still needs help. Detroit has made some pick ups in free agency both years for short term help but the greatest need has been returning the D to respectability.

I believe we devoted alot of dialogue last year, post-draft, to the fact that most everyone was on board with the Delmas pick (myself included), Pettigrew was a luxury pick, plain and simple. And I happen to agree that he will develop into a top TE someday soon, but the fact is they should've went O-Line there instead. Or at least somewhere prior to round 7.

I don't think they will, but I don't see it being a bad move for them. I think with their position in the draft, if they don't want Suh/McCoy for whatever reason, they can make a deal with somebody to move back a few spots and grab an extra pick later on.

The Detroit Lions seem to be pondering between Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma State OT Russell Okung with the No. 2 pick, according to The National Football Post's Michael Lombardi. If the Lions were to take Okung, they could move OLT Jeff Backus to guard, which would fill two needs for the team.

That's what I was thinking if they decide to pass on Suh and McCoy. If they pick Suh or McCoy with the #2, then there should be an OT for the second round.

Personally? I would LOVE to see them deal down to 4 or lower....and take OT,...or still get Suh or McCoy and the extra picks.

Not sure if anyone would deal up now though...but they might if St. Louis does not go Qb.

Who would deal up is the question? Shanny might, but hes already sitting at 4. If the Rams like Colt enough to go elsewhere at 1 I think Detroit will get a mass of offers.

Just curious..... Does Jacksonville have the ammo to move to 2 and take Bradford? Ive read somewhere Del Rio was trash talking Gerrard as a ''marginal'' NFL QB.

It's not really trash talk if it's true. Although he is marginal, that's probably not the type of comment you should be throwing out there until you have someone in hand who's better.
They could move up, but it would probably take next year's #1 and this year's #10 overall, which would just be stupid.

What makes you feel that way? IF Bradford is the real deal, with this deep draft, and the likelyhood your 2011 picks wont play till 2012 from the lockout....

Because I'm conservative by nature, and if I'm the GM of a team with lots of holes that hasn't sniffed the playoffs in a minute, I'm not mortgaging my future on an "if".

They're already paying a price this year by not having a 2nd round pick in the deepest draft we've seen in years.

Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com eports per a league source, Lito Sheppard will visit the Lions on Wednesday and Thursday.

2 day visit make it any more promising? Talk about addressing a need if this can be accomplished.

Since there is not a DB in the draft to contend for the #2 pick I doubt this has much impact on OT or DT being selected if they keep the pick unless the upgrade in the backfield makes them more comfortable foregoing the immediate upgrade on the DL.
