When is the fix in?

Seems like every year there's a questionable officiating decision.
I mean, yeah, usually more than one, but there's that one call.

And the line gets all funny. It's blurry too, but it's more in the house or neighborhood of funny.

Funny strange - like I don't get it.
Ever more so now in the era of video evidence.

And every year when that funny call goes your way, it's not so much funny as it is that old saying...

"I'd rather be lucky than good".

When the ref over-ruled that Greg Jennings had fumbled, and then the review was upheld, it looked real funny.

In fact it looked so funny, the Packers were forced to lose (if they win that game the NFL never hears the end of it - we'll call it my conspiracy-within-a-conspiracy conspiracy theory)

This recent episode of the NFL tilting with it's own ethos via a self-imposed intra-agency monitoring system could have been too big a ping on the public's radar of suspending disbelief.

Too many people would get off the couch.
If it's possible the NFL fixes its games, then it is also possible a mistake could be made.

The Packers were ethically handcuffed by that call.
The two plays to end the first half are solid proof of something being wrong.

I'm back :)
i have a question in this vein

i forget which game it was, but there was a pass called a "catch" on the field. later on replay it was clearly not a catch (not even close! it bounced or something before the receiver jumped on it). i think the call was overturned on challenge, but imo it shouldn't have to come down to that.

isn't there something wrong with the player pretending it was a catch when it was not? i mean, this wasn't a stepping out of bounds thing or a question of possession--the dude did not catch the ball and he knew it! this really bothered me and i wonder whether there should be some "ethics" required by the players

I have officiated local games, and had occasion to interact with college level officials at seminar-related events. My conversations with those individuals have led me to beleive that not all officials are equal for certain, and some are well below the standards one should reasonably expect.

If you think that no ref has ever called a game with a tilt, you are mistaken; it happens, and perhaps more frequently than any of us would comfortably accept. I do not think the NFL directs them to proceed with a certain tilt, but they are influenced by their own emotions for certain, and outside influences do exist, and I feel strongly that games sometimes take a turn based on factors other than actual play.

Gamesmanship. Force the opposition to use a challenge that they may need later.
