Wes Welker Surgery

Wes Welker scheduled surgery on Tuesday of next week to repair his torn MCL and ACL that he blew out in the final regular-season game against the Texans.

"We're just taking our time right now," Welker told Jim Traber during a radio interview in Oklahoma City, Welker's hometown, last week. "That's one thing -- we've got a little bit of time right now to wait on that to heal and just kind of get ready and make sure that we exhaust all the options and find out the best one for myself to give me the best chance to get back out there on the field."

Welker could miss anywhere from six to 12 months, depending on what doctors find.

I think this is the end of Wes Welker, as we have known him. His value to New England has been his explosiveness in the cuts he makes in his precision route running. he won't get that back this year, or next year.

By the time he is full speed, if he is able to reach that speed again, Randy Moss will no longer be the threat we know him to be. Tom Brady will be a slower Tom Brady, and much will have changed about the dynamics of the Patriots team in general.

Any loss in speed/quickness by a guy like Wes Welker is dramatic. I am a big fan of the guy, but guys his size have to be at peak physical condition to be productive. The slightest loss makes these guys "normal".

If Welker is not able to get back to what he once was, do you think that Julian Edelman could step in and give the Pats a Welker-ish clone ??

Edelman did ok in week 17

He's going to get the chance, obviously! The Pats are going to hope so.

It's a tall order, it will be interesting to see what the Pats really think at draft time. How quickly they go for a WR may show what they really think of Edelman.

I don't think taking a receiver would necessarily be indicative of Edelman not measuring up, but more indicative of Moss getting old and having too many games where he just packs it in.

Actually, quite true. Recent Pats history shows that if they really need one they trade for one. Moss...Welker. It seems they don't draft Wrs well (may be the only position they don't draft well), who was that early pick bust, anyhow?

Actually Eldelman has been mentioned quite a bit this week in a positive light at the College Bowl Practice events. Not everyone has breakout rookie seasons. Most have to grow into the spot.

Edelman should fill Welker's spot nicely. The Pat's got a lot out of him in the short time he was playing. With a year under his belt and now being able to practice with the first team offense all the time, he will be better.

On welker?? In a redraft, likely will stay away until the picture becomes much clearer, at this point it's hard to say.

Chad Jackson... 2nd round pick.

I think the Pats will take a WR in the 2nd round again this year. They have 3 of them to use (but likely trade away one or more, for later or future picks, as they always do).

I've got Welker on 2 dynasty, and 1 keeper teams. All PPR. Helped take me to the championship round in all 3 (won 1). He's a severe loss for me, but luckily, I have Edelman on the two dynasty teams also. I hope Welker will get back to his old PPR self, but I certainly don't expect it in 2010, even if he does come back in the middle of the season. I do think Edelman will just get better and keep up the 10 or so receptions a game. Of course, I also hope Welker gets better for himself. More important than FF.
