Thread for news about my Lions

Can we get back to talking about the Lions here?

Not that it's all that intersting.......

Not interesting???? We are talking a major overhaul quietly being performed on what will become a classic Ford team chassis.

Was starting to think I was in here by myself so I didn't mind the distraction of the strangest video I've watched in a while (Am I to interpret this to mean I should return to avoiding the posted video links?)

Lions | Have been impressed with Dizon

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports the Detroit Lions have been impressed with how LB Jordon Dizon has performed in the nickel defense during practices this offseason.

Nothing but good news coming out of the Lion camp.

Would appear a nice insurance policy to obtain but beyond that what is impact? Is this a player who could start??? What type of role player should be expected?

Tra Battle has been used by the Cowboys but he really is a 4-5 wheel there. He's good enough to get used here and there but has to be considered luxury depth there. With the Lions he is more of a potential upside pickup. Good enough to have seen the field good enough to make an impact, you never know. Detriot has made many pickups like this and it insures that everybody is pushed at their position. Sometimes the worst thing a team can do is go with the same old cast. You were there because you were there before. Every Lion appears to be challenged for playing time and this is a good dynamic.

Battle probably won't knock a starter out but may at least push hard for Nickleback which makes those expecting to be the Nickleback work harder and the starters spend a little more time looking over their shoulder at who is back there doing what instead of knowing with complacency the result.

Hey, any word on how Demir Boldin is doing? I wanted the Fins to pick him up as a UDFA, but from what I can see they never showed any real interest.

That is why I'm so psyched about this offseason. No headline grabbing signings for the most part but people that can compete and push those who may end up ahead of them.

I am impressed also. It takes pressure to produce gems. Maybe none of these pickups become gems but you might find a couple ou of these Free Agents do become gems it would be a big plus from there was minimal investment. Those who are already there are much more likely to turn into gems under the pressure of competition so it almost has the potential to double your gem production, to speak. Nothing can slow a players deveolpment into full potential like complacency. This also builds up depth nicely, anyteam can get a dozen injuries and fall off the tracks. But with more depth a team is less likey to be derailed with 1/2 a dozen injuries.

This sort of concerns me but since I have been very happy with the changes that have already occurred this offseason I'll definitely give new management the benefit of the doubt on this call.

I think this is more a spur in the side of Cully to make sure he comes in ready. People they have brought in at all the other positions are of the caliber to push for starting positions or push those in front of them in the depth chart. This is a way to accomplish the same thing with Cully.

Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports the Lions have parted ways with veteran tackle George Foster, who was released today. The Lions also announced that they've released fullback Jon Bradley.

I thought George was going to be gone after the 07 season. Last week I read Jansen was going to start out as depth - is it safe to say that is no longer the case?

this is from fbg:

Lions | Stafford could start sooner than later Mon Jun 1, 11:06 AM

Peter King, of SI.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Jim Schwartz said there will be strong competition for the starting quarterback job between QB Matthew Stafford and QB Daunte Culpepper this offseason.

Our view: 'The last minicamp in June, we're going to have an arms race,'' Schwartz said. If Stafford shows he is the best quarterback, he could start as early as Week 1. Schwartz has been impressed with Stafford's delivery thus far. 'We've got two criteria for when Matthew will play,'' said Schwartz. 'One is he'll play when he's ready. The second is when he's the best quarterback for us. But so far, whatever the opposite of buyers' remorse is, that's what we have. We knew he had the terrific NFL arm. But we've found out his release is just textbook classic.''

Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports the Detroit Lions agreed to a one-year contract with OT Jon Jansen worth $845,000. Nice!

Oft-injured Lions rookie Lydon Murtha not likely to contribute much this season - Detroit Lions: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio, Schedule & Stats - MLive.com

3 longterm solutions at T? Backus and Jansen no longer fit that description Murtha and Gosder could turn out to be solid but is Loper likely to develop that favorably? Barton?

Jansen is an extremely important and cheap signing for a team that needs mentoring on their O-line and overall football intelligence. If you ever saw him in the early 90's as a guest analysis for ESPN's draft coverage, you'd know what I mean.

Even if he has little left in the tank on the field, his presence on this roster will pay dividends.

I am not questioning his short-term value but the article referenced 3 long-term solutions on the roster and I will not believe he and Backus fit that description so I was wondering if Murtha, Gosder and Loper had that kind of long-term value.
