Steve Slaton Benched, Moats takes advantage of opportunity

Slaton fumbled for the 7th time this season in the first quarter and Kubiak had seen enough. He benched the 2nd year RB for the remainder of the game and replaced him with Ryan Moats. Moats responded with a career game of 126 yds and 3 TD's.

So what do you see for the future of this situation?

Well for one you can kiss any value C.Brown had goodbye.

As for Slaton, I think he gets another chance...if he screws up again...who knows. Moats has flashed like this before...and nothing came of it.

I think you have to consider the situation here. The Bill managed to score on a one play drive, following a Schaub pick, then again after completing one first down, following a big kick return. Outside of that, this offense did absolutely nothing, other than go 3 and out on most drives.

Total time of posession for the Bills? 20:52

The type of production above by an opposing offense is an absolute gift for just about any running back on the opposing team.

More than anything, this was a perfect opportunity for Kubiak to do what he did. It was a game where he could afford to make a statement to Slaton, with little risk of losing the game. What made it better? The Bills continued to do absolutely nothing, so Kubia could easily just keep Slaton on the bench.

Next three games, Texans get the Colts twice, and Tennessee. They can forget about these teams having the ball for only 20 minutes. Houston will need Slaton back on the field, hopefully paying better attention now to holding on to the football.

I hope you're right Mike... but something tells me Slaton's value will be less than it was going forward.

Slatons value could very well be lessoned, but typically, he doesn't need a ton of touches to be effective (real or fantasy).

No doubt, Moats earned playing time, and will get it, provided he can continue to produce.

This can actually help the Texans, at a time when they really need it. Losing the tight end, mixed with a rather tough short term schedule, Houston can possibly take advantage of this buy getting both Moats and Slaton on the field at the same time. They need all the offensive power they can get having the Colts twice in the next 4 weeks, and what will be another tough divisional game against the Titans in the middle of that.

Moats, like Choice, took full advantage of his 15 minutes of fame. But I agree that we shouldn't put too much stock in Moats ruining Slaton's fantasy value too much in terms of yardage. Although after his performance yesterday, I wouldn't be surprised if Moats become the goal-line RB.

Indy and Tenn are good against the run, but they're no Pittsburgh. It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds.

When Andy benched McNabb last year, the impact to McNabb's game was indeed positive. I think it was a smart move on Kubiak's part.

I think if nothing else he knows he has two backs he can put on the field. Moats crossed the Chris Brown ACL tear carry threshold and kept on chuggin.

per cbssports:

News: Speaking with the media on Monday, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak expressed an interest in using Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats and Chris Brown as part of a three-headed rushing attack going forward. Saying he was in no hurry to make a decision, Kubiak will judge the running backs based on their strengths as well as what down and distance the Texans are facing. Moats took Slaton's place on the field at Buffalo in Week 8 following Slaton's fifth lost fumble of the season and tore it up for over 150 total yards and three touchdowns. Slaton finished with the fumble and only 10 receiving yards, giving him a negative performance in standard-scoring leagues.
Analysis: We're guessing that Brown will continue to work at the goal line and in some pass-blocking situations while Moats and Slaton will split the other reps. Kubiak did hint that Slaton's receiving skills were a bit better than Moats', so perhaps he'll go into a third-down role. Regardless, the whole situation is a potential mess. If you own Slaton, treat him as a middle- to low-end No. 3 Fantasy rusher and aim to get Moats off waivers. Moats will be targeted by many Fantasy owners as a priority waiver claim and could be equally useful as a No. 3 rusher. Brown is no better than a low-end option, especially since he has struggled in his role as a goal-line back. The Texans might do fairly well on the ground in Week 9 playing against the Colts.

GTFO Kubiak I hope you die. I lose by less than 1 point cause of you. You gonna bench schaub next week if he throws a couple more picks. Fag.

Slaton will probably lose some carries to Moats. I could see Moats being the goal line back. Kubiak needs to put Brown on the bench and go with a two-headed monster. They need a powerfull running game to get through these next few games.

Personally I think this could prove to motivate Slaton. Fear of losing a starting role could be just what this guy needs to get off his ass and play.

You think it's just a motivational tactic? I'm encouraged hearing a lot of people say this... but I'm not sure I buy it. Moats has earned himself a role in the offense now, and Slaton's carries (especially near the goal line) aren't very high to begin with.

I was thinking the same thing until halfway through MNF. I got lucky that Harper & Sharper were better than Brees. I had Frank Gore on the bench, which really made me mad. Starting Slaton vs. Buffalo was a no brainer since the Bills rush defense sucks so much. Those 3 Moats TDs should have been Slaton TDs.

Also Mario Williams was worthless on Sunday too. I had -.0.9 points from my two Texans on my roster. I hated the Texans for the first time in my life this weekend. Never had a reason to hate them before as they have been pretty insignificant until lately.

Moats has earned more playing time, but that is only short term, unless he can continue to produce.

Don't forget that Moats was playing in the perfect situation for just about any running back to succeed. No defense is going to be able to stop you when their offense continually goes 3 and out and allows you to constantly be on the field.
