rotoworld,

Steve Slaton reiterated that he's "doing well" in his recovery from offseason neck surgery.

"I participated in OTAs and I'm just waiting 'til June to get cleared," he said. "Everything is right on track for me to be ready for camp." An optimistic Slaton added that he "want(s) to be the starter and that's what I'm working on."

Updating an earlier post.
rotoworld,

Rookie Ben Tate (hamstring) is not expected to resume practicing at Texans OTAs until next week.

The injury could be a moot point by June, but it's a concern at the moment. "(Tate) is way behind everybody right now," noted coach Gary Kubiak, "but we've gotta be smart and get him well before he competes." Steve Slaton and Arian Foster figure to be handling the majority of first-team practice reps.

According to Footballguys there is an artcle out that states basically he thinks his fumble issues were caused due to the neck injury. He states his hand was numb, and he could not be sure how hard he was gripping the ball. If that is the case, and the neck is fixed......he could once again do well. Especially if they use Foster or Tate to spell him and keep down the wear and tear.

I didn't even think of that, it didn't occur to me about the neck. But that makes a lot of sense. If that was the case with his fumbling, he should be fine this year.

(nfl.com)The official team website for the Texans reports that RB Steve Slaton continues to make strides this offseason in trying to prove that he's more like the player he showed as a rookie in 2008 than how he played last season, when he was plagued by injury and a fumble problem. "I think he's regaining his confidence every day that he's out here," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I just think you see a guy that struggled last year that's saying, 'I'm not going to struggle again. I'm going to get back to playing the way I'm capable of playing.' That's what's I'm seeing right now."

rotoworld,
Steve Slaton (neck surgery) is still wearing a red, no-contact jersey in Texans practices.

There's no hitting allowed in spring practices, but the Texans are being extra cautious until Slaton's June 25th checkup that could clear him for training camp. Arian Foster is still running with the first team, prompting ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky to say he "could put me in a spot where I've got to give him a bit more credit."

rotoworld,
Texans coach Gary Kubiak is optimistic that Steve Slaton will be cleared for live contact in camp during his June 25 medical check.

"Everything from our standpoint we're told should be okay, and just get him back and used to contact again will be the key," said Kubiak. "If they cut him loose, we'll go to work. We need to get his confidence back about getting hit." Slaton ran with the second-team offense behind Arian Foster at OTAs. He'll enter the season as Houston's third-down back if all goes as planned.
