St. Louis Rams Receivers

(RotoWire) Denario Alexander (knee) was held out of the club's inner-squad scrimmage on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Analysis: Five surgeries over a three year span on the same knee always makes us nervous and the way the Rams have been relatively tight-lipped about the extent of Alexander's injury has us wondering. It could be that the club is just handling Alexander with kid-gloves because his potential is through the roof but if his knee is already acting up we have a hard time seeing him making it through the year without missing some significant time at some point.

(RotoWire) Donnie Avery (hamstring) remained sidelined during the Rams' scrimmage on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Analysis: Avery's surgically repaired knee is doing just fine, unfortunately his hamstring isn't and one has to wonder if this guy is every really going to be able to make it through a season without missing at least five or six games due to one ailment or another.

(RotoWire) Danny Amendola had eight receptions for 70 yards and one touchdown during the Rams' inner-squad scrimmage on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Analysis: Amendola continues to be one of Sam Bradford's favorite targets. The diminutive wideout is almost guaranteed the slot receiver job barring any injuries and is a nice sleeper pick in most fantasy leagues.

No word on rookies Pettis and Salas

(FFToday) The word out of St. Louis is that Brandon Gibson has been an early standout among the Rams' wideouts. But head coach Steve Spagnuolo also likes what he has seen so far of rookie WRs Greg Salas and Austin Pettis. "I'll tell you what, they as much as any of the vets, have picked up the system pretty well," Spagnuolo said of the two rookies. "They don't look like normal rookies to me. By that I mean, normally they'd be tired, they'd be making a lot of mental mistakes. I don't really see that."
Analysis: St. Louis is generating a lot of interest this season thanks to new pass-heavy OC Josh McDaniels, who coached Brandon Lloyd last season. Lloyd broke out in his age-29 season after a mostly disappointing career as a journeyman receiver. Along with strong sure-handed players like Salas and Pettis, there is a very good chance another under-the-radar WR such as Gibson or Mike Sims-Walker will have a career year in McDaniels' offense.

I'm not sold on MSW leading in receptions, but TDs, definitely. Amendola gets my vote for most recpetions. I'd even say MSW gets more yards, too.

One of the bright spots on the afternoon came during a red zone period when tight end Billy Bajema

and wide receiver Danny Amendola

(twice) found the end zone to help the first-team offense go 4-for-5 during the drill.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo said WR Danny Amendola has "sparked things" during training camp. Amendola led the team in receptions (85) and receiving yards (689) last season and appears likely to be one of the team's 11 receivers in camp to lock in a roster spot. Amendola has been trying to learn the team's new offensive system, which he said is 100 percent different from a year ago. He noted he is making mistakes, but is learning a lot and progressing within the new system. He has been working as the team's starting slot receiver.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams WR Brandon Gibson has been running with the first-string offense during training camp. He has improved his work ethic and attitude and seemed to win over head coach Steve Spagnuolo late last year, which has seemed to carry over into 2011.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams rookie WR Greg Salas (hamstring) has missed time recently due to a hamstring injury. Unless he is a complete flop during training camp or suffers a significant injury, he is likely to make the team's final roster.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams WR Donnie Avery (knee) has been held out of practice the past few days. He is working his way back from a knee injury that cost him the entire 2010 season, and the team's training staff has decided to hold him back a bit until he is 100 percent healthy.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams WR Danario Alexander (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, after missing several days with a swollen left knee. He said his knee just swells up on him a little bit. He was working with the first-string offense before his knee issues developed. "None of our jobs are secure. We've just got to come out and produce every day," Alexander said.

(KFFL) St. Louis Rams second-year WR Mardy Gilyard (undisclosed) has had a solid start during training camp. He saw some first-string reps at slot receiver while WR Danny Amendola was not allowed to practice due to post-lockout rules. He had to be helped off the field by the team's training staff Tuesday, Aug. 9, and head coach Steve Spagnuolo said Gilyard was having trouble seeing. He wasn't sure if Gilyard was suffering from migraines.

(RotoWire) Sims-Walker and slot receiver Danny Amendola seem to be the only two Ram receivers who look assured of a roster spot thus far, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Analysis: The competition for receiving jobs in Ram camp may be as fierce as any in the league. There are currently eight strong candidates on the roster but the team is probably only going to keep six. The Post-Dispatch hinted that the club will likely keep rookies Austin Pettis and Greg Salas since they were drafted for a reason so it looks like there may only be two spots open for the likes of Brandon Gibson, Mardy Gilyard, Donnie Avery, and Danirio Alexander.

(TheHuddle) St. Louis Rams WRs Donnie Avery (knee) and Mike Sims-Walker (groin) were each unable to practice Tuesday, Aug. 16. Analysis: Avery is pretty far out of the picture with his ACL rehab and could be released. Sims-Walker hasn't had a memorable camp: He'll make the team for sure but could be buried in the rotation early on. Brandon Gibson and Danny Amendola have been getting the most first-team reps while rookies Greg Salas and Austin Pettis have impressed too. Danario Alexander is having trouble with his left knee (surgically repaired four times) but gets some first-team reps when he practices.
