So, is Falcons QB Matt Ryan one weapon away from being a top notch QB?

I like Matty Ice and the Atlanta O performs nicely as a whole. He is one of the better QBs but not quite explosive at the position. Turner supplies a reliable rushing attack. White is great, of course. Gonzo is dependable, still potent but doesn't really explode by himself. This trio does put up some solid numbers but it is more methodical than outright explosive and good teams seem to have that bust loose capacity. Would adding a top FA WR make a big impact on this O or don't you think so? Who would you go after Edwards? Holmes? Rice?

I am not sure I agree with you assumption here. The assumption being that he is not explosive due to lack of tools. I would say the lack of explosiveness is due to the offense, not Matt. Lets face it. This team is more designed to play in the AFC North than the NFC. They are a run first, run often type system, with White getting open due to the running game. Gonzales gives h im the safe target in the middle. Not sure adding any more to the passing attack would matter. I also think they need more help on O-line if they want to convert to a more down field passing game.

I like Michael Turner, but that offense would be much better with Jason Snelling as the starter. Why? Because Snelling CATCHES PASSES. Everyone knows Turner is no threat out of the backfield.

If Turner could catch, he would be a top 3 pick in redrafts.................

So you are both saying that The Falcons could become explosive by changing their play calling.

Not exactly. They also would have to improve the O-line, to give Matt more time, and also go for a Rb with more speed. White has alot of long passes, but Matt doesn't have alot of time without more help on line. Then, if they really wanted to stress the passing game, a Green or Julio Jones would definately free up White more. Similar to how Maclin helps Jackson in Philly.

But that is not Atlanta's game. Ball control is Atlanta's game. Then take a shot if it is wide open.

They could certainly open it up more if they chose to.

Why wouldn't they choose to ?? dont they want to get to the next level instead of crashing and burning in the playoffs.

The Falcons could be an NFC badass if they would just loosen up, pull out all the stops and play the game to win.

:headscratch:

They well may after another disappointing ending to their year 007 but I feel that last year they were determined to play smash mouth, ball control offense.

To get to the playoffs, ball control-smash mouth is not a bad way to get there but when its win or go home one would think its time to get busy and play to win, if the Falcons dont the brass ring will elude them every playoff trip.

Atlanta's D statisticly looked strong during the season with Turner playing keep away with the ball most of the time. The basic gameplan was good most of the time. But if the other teams O was able to push the envelop That D showed some weaknesses when the game was more of a footrace.

:yeahthat:

Which is why they wont' open it up. A ball control offense hides a multitude of sins on a not so great defense. They need secondary help, and some D-line help. Until they can fix that, the best way to win, is play keep away

I agree with this. Why ever tip your hand because of pieces in your lineup.

seems atlanta's 2nd wr's can't stay healthy/consistent . . . that, and the poor pass protection may also be dictating their game plan . . . but, i don't see them upgrading the wr position in fa this year . . . wouldn't surprise me to see a pick in the 1st 3 rounds depending on who falls to them though . . . ;)

I commented on this the other day, but didn't really give it a lot of thought. However, I was watching the NFL network (raining, windy, cold and miserable in Northern California today) and they were showing some Falcon highlights. Snelling looked friggin good and I really wonder if Turner is that much better of a runner at this point in his career with the various injuries piling up. That extra impact player that Ryan needs in the passing game could be an every down back that is a pass catching threat.

Anyway, I'll be looking a little closer at Snelling come draft time. Well, if there is a draft...........
