SO EXCLUSIVE: Seahawks practice report

I went to practice this afternoon over at Seahawks HQs along Lake Washington in Renton. The new practice facility is amazing, and fan friendly. They built a large grass burm next to the practice fields for the fans. Also, all food & beverages there were $2 or less. The Seahawks really had their fans in mind when they built the facility & when they set up the open practices. Space is limited, so fans had to reserve tickets in advance and be bussed in from nearby downtown Renton.

Practice report:

- Nate Burleson was the star of practice today. He was the guy Hasselbeck felt most comfortable throwing to. He made the most spectacular catches, and also did the best after the catch. It is clear last year's injury isn't hindering him. T.J. Houshmanzedah pulled in a few catches as did rookie Deon Butler.

- Justin Forsett was the #1 at RB as Jones & Duckett weren't suited up. Forsett had some good runs, catches, and throws.

- Hasselbeck looked great, as did back-up Seneca Wallace.

- The Seahawks defense is going to be really good this year. They are loaded up front & at LB. Rookie Aaron Curry is going to be a monster at LB. The Defense Line is also really good. Brandon Mebane should have a breakout year & Cory Redding is a beast. Rookie DE Nick Reed had a great game on Saturday, but I only watched him in warm-ups today.

- The punter also looked great.

People anchor their boats off shore & watch practice from their boat. Last year they were still finishing up some of the construction and practices were closed to fans, so fans showed in droves on boats to watch practice. Lake Washington is huge, plus is connected to Puget Sound via the Ballard Locks, so fans can boat in from just about anywhere in the metro area. Mike Holmgren lived on Mercer Island, which is the area across the lake from the pics above, and took his boat to work every now & then. Most of the players live just up the hill from the facility next to hilltop pair of golf courses.

Today they had open practice across the lake at Husky Stadium over at the Univ. of Washington. They can only accommodate 1,500 fans at their practice facility, so they have been having a few practices at Husky Stadium so more fans can see them practice.

Steve Wyche, of NFL.com, reports several teams have reached out to unrestricted free-agent RB Warrick Dunn (Buccaneers), but he is awaiting further options before deciding if he will sign with a team.

The Eagles and Seahawks are two of the teams that have inquired about Warrick Dunn. As training camp and preseason continues there should be running backs that go down with injury, which will open up more opportunity for the veteran. It would be especially intriguing if Dunn is reunited with TJ Duckett and Jim Mora Jr. in Seattle.

LT Jones having knee scoped Thurs

This can't be good

Mora is figuring to be without both Trufant and Jones when the Seahawks open the regular season Sept. 13 against St. Louis.


"Walt just felt weird in his knee. We got an MRI on it, to be safe," Mora said, adding there might be some "loose bodies" in the knee and that the surgery is "just to check it out."
Mora is optimistic Jones will return this season.
"We don't think that it's anything significant, but we just want to make sure," Mora said.
Until then, usual right tackle Sean Locklear will stay on the left side. Ray Willis will start at right tackle.
At the beginning of camp, Jones said his knee felt "pretty good."

The News
According to the Seattle Times, Walter Jones underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee and will be reevaluated in a couple of weeks.
Our View
Jone has loose bodies and scar tissue removed from the knee. He will rest and be reassessed, but typical recovery time from a scoped knee is four to six weeks. Stay tuned as the Seahawks season could hang in the balance.

The OL needs a little work. Hopefully they fix everything by week one. Deon Butler had a nice game tonight.

Caught some of the game last night. Weird seeing Ken Lucas back with the Seahawks. Overall, much improvement is noticed.

Agree KD....OL could use more work.

Saw that earlier. Not much info out there. Doesn't sound too serious although most 'Hawks fans would prefer to see Unger in at center anyways

4. Sean Locklear looked very confused. He is making the most dramatic transition of any player on Seattle's roster, learning a new position and a new scheme. He was fine on Seattle's first play despite Denver's blitz, but struggled from the second play on.
It wasn't that Elvis Dumervil was out-muscling Locklear, though Lock clearly struggled against Dumervil's bull rush, it was Locklear wasn't sure who to block until he was walked deep into the pocket. It meant when Dumervil engaged and began shoving Locklear, he didn't have to push Locklear far to back him into Hasselbeck.
Locklear was nearly beat by Dumervil on the second play. He didn't block Andra Davis on the third play and Davis used backside pursuit to tackle T.J. Duckett after a gain of only two. Dumervil got steps on Locklear on Seattle's fifth play. Locklear was looking straight ahead and right, but not at Dumervil despite shading Dumervil. Dumervil was very deep into the pocket before Lock even touched him, and from that point his progress wasn't very significant. Just looking at the two though, Locklear looked like he was having his ass handed to him. He attempted to block Dumervil and Kenny Peterson on Seattle's seventh play. For a second he did. Dumervil disengaged Lock and tackled Duckett after a gain of four.
It's not good to be beat in any fashion. If Locklear's confusion persists it will be as debilitating as any other weakness, but given his experience at left tackle and Seattle's transitioning blocking scheme, struggles can be expected. So can growth.
