Senior Bowl

Didn't watch the game but read several recaps and analysis, as well as several blogs from folks who were in Mobile all week. The names that kept coming up were, in no particular order:
Kyle Wilson (who I just picked in the SO Mock) :)
Mike Iupati
Jarrett Brown, QB, WVU
Matt Tennant, C, Boston College
Daryl Washington
B. Graham (Mayock compared him to former Michigan standout L.Woodley, which seems accurate)
Geno Atkins, DT, Georgia
Mardy Gilyard
Brandon Ghee, CB, Wake Forest
Andre Roberts, WR, The Citadel (Gonna be doing more research on this guy, possible mid-round small college steal, a la my boy Johnny Knox)

Quick notes on Andre Roberts.

-5'11", 192, low-mid 4.4's in the 40
-Had a better season statistically in 2008 with 95-1334-14 TD's than 2009 with 77-792-8 TD's
-Accomplished punt returner with 4 career RTD's
-In addition to a stellar Sr. Bowl week, he also put up 9 catches for 153 yards vs. CLEMSON in 2008, so level of competition is seemingly less of a concern than with many FCS stars
-Added 12 lbs. during the 2009 season without losing any 40 time
-Polished route running and sticky hands are 2 items that constantly popped up while reading about this youngster, and I doubt there are any character red flags from a guy graduating from a military school.

I was mixed on him yesterday. Heard good things during the week. he had a nice catch early in the second half. But also dropped a very routine catch later in the game. He looked raw to me and needs to improve with consistent route running. Could be a small school steal, could be another Jerome Simpson.....jury is still out on him with me.

lack of talent

Hard to get excited about the Senior Bowl. Even the scouts, for the most part, have seen what they need to see come Thursday and they clear out.

A few years ago Tony Hunt won the SB MVP, sooooo.... *fart sound*

01/27/2010 - Senior Bowl, Tuesday: Rutgers' Devin McCourty and California's Syd'Quan Thompson have also helped their cause this week. McCourty has the agility and straight-line speed for man coverage. He breaks on the ball quickly and has the active hands to rip away passes at the last moment. Thompson (5-9, 182) lacks the size and straight-line speed teams want as a press corner, but his instincts and physicality make him arguably the draft's top zone coverage cornerback. Unlike Wilson, McCourty and Thompson are standout run defenders, who haven't been able to show off their physicality and aggression in practice due to the no-tackle rules being enforced. - Rob Rang and Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

The first-team all-Big East performer may have been the week's most disappointing prospect. Scouts anticipated that the 6-foot, 179-pounder might struggle with press coverage, but the sticky hands that had helped him emerge as one of the country's most dependable playmakers over the past two seasons abandoned him this week. Gilyard dropped multiple passes each day.

Huh?

This is the only bad Ive read about him. I just googled up countless reports of how well he did....

I didn't watch the game, but i heard all of the clamor about him. My guess is that this is only about the practices, and he might have put that to bed with the game. I just found it and put it out there.

No its a good link. I was just questioning the writer himself.

I notice he didnt mention Tim Tebow, an obvious inclusion on the list.

I agree Sarge, have read multiple blogs covering the entire week and outside of a bad start on Monday heard nothing but Outstanding reviews!

But he has Price of Ohio as a riser and that is the first good things I have heard about him all week. From what i read he disapointed in practices and he looked lost in the game IMO.

This is kind of what I thought might have happened. This is likely just one (or 2) man's opinions.

These players make up for rough week with Senior Bowl success - NFL - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

WR Mardy Gilyard, Cincinnati: Gilyard was the Senior Bowl's best receiver, catching five passes for 103 yards and a score. It won't erase his erratic showing earlier in the week, when he dropped too many passes. His 32-yard touchdown reception of a beautifully thrown deep ball from Central Michigan quarterback Dan LeFevour was the best offensive play of the game. Gilyard's agility and speed made him a threat each time he touched the ball as a returner, and he posted 77 yards on two kickoff returns (53 yards) and two punt returns (24).

In the early practices, Gilyard had multiple drops. It was all over the Cincy sites. But he got much better later in practice, and had a hell of a game.

Some are concerned with his size....and think he will only be a return type guy. I still think he could be a heck of a reciever in teh NFL.
