A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

LeGrand had emergency surgery overnight to stabilize the spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.

I saw this on tv live. Prayers go out to him and his family. This is the worst thing that could happen to someone, playing the game that they love and all of the hard work put in to get to this point in your life. It's terribly sad.

He has been moved.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—Rutgers says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand, who was paralyzed from the neck down making a tackle against Army on Oct. 16, has been transferred to a New Jersey spinal cord rehabilitation center.

The Rutgers athletic department said Wednesday that LeGrand has been admitted to Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange for the next phase of his treatment. LeGrand had been under care since the accident at Hackensack University Medical Center.

The 20-year-old junior from Avenel, N.J., was injured while making a tackle on a kickoff return. Rutgers said updates on his condition would be issued by the family through the school.

LeGrand’s mother Karen said her son “is in good spirits and anxious to take the next step in his rehabilitation process.”
