I can't really remember if he was a factor in the run defense or not but what about the Cowboys losing Greg Ellis?

Ellis was a DE in the 4-3. He was switched to an outside LB to rush the QB from the Edge in the switch to 3-4. He wasn't suited to it and let go as they drafted a LB, I believe.

BTW, my rankings are coming along very well. I'm going to give it the weekend and give all the Outlaws a chance to weigh in on free agency moves that +/- a team's running defense before I post my final rankings.

I will then begin to break down every team's schedule against the run. I've already started to look into some of the more interesting RBs schedules. Some of the guys that I am very high on are already getting my 2nd guess.

Dallas has parted ways with 10 players who helped the team finish 2008 as the eighth-ranked defense in the NFL in yards per game. Then again, that's the same defense that gave up more points than the Cowboys' offense scored. Maybe the 160 points the Cowboys gave up in their six division games (26.6 average) drove the changes. Maybe it was the talent on the bench, financial considerations, or maybe, in the case of Pacman Jones, enough was enough.
Greg Ellis, Anthony Henry, Zach Thomas, Adam Jones and safety Roy Williams were all cut. Chris Canty, Kevin Burnett, Tank Johnson, Keith Davis and Carlos Polk weren't re-signed. Those 10 defenders accounted for 95 starts, 355 tackles, 17 sacks, 25 passes defended, two interceptions and one safety in 2008. That production must be replaced.
The Cowboys signed just three defenders -- safety Gerald Sensabaugh, linebacker Keith Brookings and defensive end Igor Oshansky -- during the offseason. They also didn't have a first- or a second-round draft pick and added Western Illinois outside linebacker Jason Williams in the third round. The Cowboys are counting on former backups and players they have been developing to come through for them next season, which is more like the Pittsburgh Steelers' philosophy than a typical Dallas plan.

Tank Johnson was brought in when The Cowboys Nose Tackle was injuried for the year. Tank did a decent job but it was an adjustment for him. Now after a year as a nose tackle the Bengals have brought him in to be their Nosetackle.

Everybody in the front 7 reguardless of 3-4 or 4-3 gets a good share of tackles so it does have an impact on the run game. It's just wasn't Ellis primary job if you had to gauge overall impact.

DT, not NT, Bengals are still running a 4-3

I would say yes, ER, but not a signifigant downgrade. They still have Reed, and although he and Ray are loosing a bit of their step, they're still dominate in the NFL. I think the loss of Bart Scot hurt them the most, not to take anything away from Ryan.

Bucs D = crap right now. I've got my fingers crossed but I'm not holding my breath.

Seattle moves up for 2 reasons. Julian Peterson is out, and Cory Redding/Aaron Curry are in. I know you said to disregard rookies, but I'll maintain that he's a day 1 starter at a high level and will impact that aspect of their D. Not to mention that Peterson carves his niche in pass defense where he's been one of the best LB's at that for years as opposed to a tackling machine.

Depending on what you thought of Seattles D last year here are a couple points to consider with there ranking. Last year I believe they were in or near the top 5 in 2 very key stats. Points given up per Drive and Yards given up per Drive. The inability of the Offence to generate 1st downs and burn up clock led to the impression that the Seahawks had a weak Defence and most of this was blamed on the passing D. Not so, They were just on the field way too much.

So lets look at what has been done to improve that problem. I see a minor
improvement as well as some healed injuries. I feel Seattle has at RB has declined, but the improvement in the Oline creates a wash in the running game. The passing game will see the biggest improvement with the addition of Housh coupled with getting Has, Branch and Nate back as well as another year under Carlsons belt.

Redding, Cole, and Mebane in the middle, with Kerney, Tapp, and Jackson on the outside and the LB corp will make this one of the better D's in the league.

I'm going to be finishing the pre-season rankings today. Anyone have anything they would like to add for consideration?

Perhaps the addition/subtractions of an important enough offensive player that will change the defense.
