Report: Panthers hesitant to start Cam Newton

Team officials tell SI.com's Bucky Brooks that Cam Newton will not start for the Panthers until he has a firm understanding of the offense and a strong supporting cast.
The loss of offseason workouts and a potential Steve Smith trade are two factors working against Newton. He needs extensive work on his mechanics, and the Panthers' playbook may prove to be a challenge on the heels of Auburn's numeric play-calling system. The Panthers may use Newton as a situational threat early in the season, taking advantage of his size and running ability on short-yardage plays.

He will be waiting a long time then.

Newton is also supposedly training with Ken Dorsey, who has extensive experience in this offense.
