Re-Vote???

Tommy Tuberville's 2004 Auburn football team was never given an opportunity to play Southern California for the national championship.
Now that the NCAA has ruled that the Trojans will have to vacate their 55-19 victory over Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl because star running back Reggie Bush was ineligible, Tuberville says the Tigers should be named national champions.
"We never complained when they went by the process the last time, and they should go by the process this time," said Tuberville, who is now head coach at Texas Tech. "If they were ineligible, I think they should have a revote and let people vote on it and decide who they think was the best team that year. If everybody thinks it was Oklahoma, that's fine. If everybody thinks it was Auburn, that's fine."
The Tigers finished 13-0 in 2004 but finished No. 2 in the country after defeating Virginia Tech 16-13 in the Sugar Bowl.
Bill Hancock, the chairman of the BCS, said Thursday that if the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee rules that the Trojans should vacate their '04 national championship, there would be no BCS champion for that particular season. Hancock said the BCS would take no action until after USC's appeal to the NCAA is finalized.

I thought Auburn was screwed in 2004....and even more so now. If USC has to vacate that win.....they vacate that title.....and you need to give the title to Auburn IMO. If I was Auburn, I would claim a NC that season. Not sure how the BCS can stick their head in the sand and just say there was no title that season....but it's the BCS.....not surprised.

Interesting thought. How would you compensate Auburn if they were to be installed as national champs 6 years later?

Can't just give Auburn the NC. Who knows who hould have won against Auburn/Oklahoma. No easy answer here really. Maybe Co champions? But that idea sucks just as bad. No champion is just a cop out by the NCAA commitee. Maybe get rid of the BCS? Now that makes sence. LOL

While I agree in theory with ya Cerberus......the fact remains that they just handed NC's to teams by the way of a vote for decades until the BCS came along. Given the situation, I have no issue looking at the bodies of work and crowning Auburn the champs.

True i wasn't thinking of that. Now 6 yrs later, could a vote really be the right thing to do, would the better team at the time be voted as champions or would it be a popularity contest of times now on the decision?

They could always bring back the palyers from 6 yrs from Auburn/Oklahoma and let them play it out and see what happens. LOL. Now thats an interesting but off the wall thought.

They should award the championship to Auburn IMO. Lots of good points made on this thread. Auburn finished 2nd. If #1 is no longer #1 then #2 should get it by default. You know what they tell the first runner up at the Miss USA pagent every year don't you.

This is assuming that the championship is based on #1 vs #2. 2004 did not spin that way. Although Auburn was #2, they didn't make it to the nation championship game. Regardless if you agree or disagree with that decision, that was the case. I think that you have to give it to Oklahoma. That was a crappy game to watch. But Auburn, no matter how you feel about it, did not make it to the big game. You cannot just over look Oklahoma. Now, I don't sit here and pretend to know what they should do, but I don't think giving Auburn the title makes much sense.

USC will not lose its AP national title from 2004 despite heavy NCAA sanctions against the program involving that timeframe, according to a report Friday in the Los Angeles Times.

"The 2004 poll stands," AP sports editor Terry Taylor confirmed in an e-mail to the Times, according to the report. "The poll is intended to measure on-field performance. If teams are allowed to play, they're allowed to be ranked and USC certainly played in 2004."
