Ravens sign Donte Stallworth

Hope comes with batteries
Adam Schefter is reporting the Ravens will sign Donte Stallworth to a 1 year deal worth up to 1.2 million.

News: The Ravens signed WR Donte' Stallworth to a one-year contract on Wednesday. Stallworth was released by the Browns earlier this offseason after being suspended for all of the 2009 campaign for being convicted of vehicular manslaughter. He was recently reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "We've given a lot of thought to this and we've done extensive research into Donte' beyond football," Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome told the official team Web site. "He made a huge mistake. There's no doubt about that. ... As (owner) Steve (Bisciotti) has said, we believe in second chances, and Donte' does deserve that. But, we've signed him because we want to get better, and we think he has a chance to help us."
Analysis: The move adds depth to the Ravens' receiving corps, but don't expect Stallworth to dominate. After all, the 29-year-old receiver with a history of nagging hamstring injuries has never posted a 1,000-yard season, has had more than five touchdowns twice and has only played 16 regular-season games three times in seven seasons. Consider Stallworth a candidate for 600 yards and five touchdowns, making him no better than a low-end reserve who you might be able to pluck off waivers during the season.

What a waste of money. I hope this is not the ONLY thing they do at Wr this year.......

He wont have to do anything other than run in a straight line fast. I think he can handle it.

Uh, that has been his MO his whole career. Look how often he has been hurt....and then reassess this statement.

"Peter King of Sports Illustrated reports via Twitter the Ravens will sign wide receiver Donte' Stallworth.
Following up on the story that Peter King first reported, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports the agreed-to deal will be worth $900,000, with Stallworth able to earn another $300,000 in incentives, according to a source."

I would agree with bobeaux and would go a step further and state this will likely be a nice pick up for the Ravens.

Well, I kinda like it. Like Phicinfan, I would hope they would do more, But. I have waited for the Ravens to do something at WR for 2-3 years and nothing has been the result, so far. So, I will take Stallworth with a grain of salt and really hope they do more but it would surprise the h double hockey sticks out of me if they do.

The other teams required him to try and learn/run some routes... You can really twist an ankle trying to cut.

Snap the ball. Run in a straight line fast. No route running whatsoever. No cuts, no muss, no fuss.

I love this pick up. Personally, I'm a huge Stallworth fan, not so much in the sense that he's a monster player, but that he can be the possesion reciever they need opposite a TE. He's a good slot reciever that can get you good underneath routes when you catch defense's stacking a LB on him. He handled his legal situation in the best possible way and I'm excited for him to get a 2nd chance.

On the flip side the Ravens NEED WRs... Flacco looked more inaccurate this season than last and I'd personally like to see more short passes from him. I know that Ray Rice was a threat through the air the whole season but with an option like Stallworth I think the play action gets a nice benefit.

rotoworld,

According to Ravens beat writer Mike Preston, Donte' Stallworth's "legs look really fresh" on the OTA practice field.

"He looks as fast as advertised," Preston added. Stallworth is coming off a year out of football, so this is good news for the Ravens. They plan to use him as a situational deep threat behind Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason.

As a Saints fan I have to wonder how long it will be until he is injured again?

rotoworld,
The Ravens have tried Donte' Stallworth on punt returns during OTAs.

A bit of a surprise. Stallworth doesn't have a great track record as a returner, and they may just be preparing him as a backup to Chris Carr. His possible use as a special teamer is a sign, though, he won't get starter-worthy snaps.
