cbssports.com,
Rams WR Donnie Avery was carted off the field late in the second quarter of Thursday's preseason game against the Patriots with a right knee injury. Avery was injured on a deep pass from QB Sam Bradford down the right sideline. Avery went up for the pass and failed to come down with a reception. After hitting the ground, he grabbed his right knee immediately. After being looked at by trainers, Avery was carted off the field. His night ended after two catches for 48 yards, including a long gain of 32 yards. The incomplete pass was the only target Avery failed to catch.

Analysis: If this injury turns out to be serious, it would be a devastating blow to the Rams' receiving corps. Avery led St. Louis in 2009 with 589 yards and five touchdowns. He was having a quiet preseason up until Thursday's injury. Even though Avery was likely going to be playing with a rookie QB for most of the season, he was still considered the team's best receiver. Avery was pretty much a late-round Fantasy WR before the injury. If he is out for an extended period, then his Fantasy value will suffer.

Updating this story, Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo stated after the game Avery's knee injury "appears to be signifigant". Normally thats coach speak for a torn ACL.

If he is gone, St Louis will likely have to look to Brandon Gibson (or payoff Vincent Jackson's high salary demands)

(RotoWire) Coach Steve Spagnuolo does not sound optimistic about the injury Avery suffered in Thursday's preseason game, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. "Donnie probably has a significant knee injury," Spagnuolo said after the game.
Analysis: "We'll know a little bit more after we get the tests (on Sunday)," Spagnuolo added. "He was a little bit down, and rightfully so. Hopefully, it's not as bad as we think." If the injury does indeed knock Avery out for a significant period of time, then the Rams will likely seek some wideout help, via a trade or by adding a free agent. It could also lead to added opportunities for the likes of Laurent Robinson, Mardy Gilyard, Brandon Gibson and Keenan Burton.

rotoworld,
The Rams announced Friday that Donnie Avery is done for the 2010 season after tearing his ACL in Thursday night's preseason game.

hehehe...heheheh..hehe...
Just sad, I saw that attempted catch and for a guy to end his season in a game that really didn't matter is tragic. Just stupid injury that turned out to be a serious thing.

Yeah I agree, I thought Gilyard looked real good last night.

More from rotoworld,
Look for Brandon Gibson to be moved to flanker, where he'll compete with rookie Mardy Gilyard and perhaps usual slot Danny Amendola for starting snaps. Gibson is not a major talent downgrade, but the loss is highly disappointing for St. Louis with Avery finally showing signs of coming into his own as a vertical threat receiver. It's a blow to Sam Bradford's outlook.

I cant remember in recent years so many season ending knee etc... injuries during the pre-season.

Maybe just rookies and other players trying to solidify a roster spot for himself need only to play during the pre-season and keep the guaranteed starters on the sidelines

Gibson did well last year. I think he will do okay this year. If they dont trade for Jackson they will have a talented but very raw starting 4

It looks like Amendola gets the first crack at replacing Avery in the starting lineup opposite Laurent Robinson. Amendola already was playing a lot as the slot receiver in three-receiver sets, but this would basically put him on the field for every play on offense. Analysis: The Rams do not figure to have one of the higher scoring offenses this season, but the increase in playing time should yield enough targets to make Amendola a low-risk option with mild upside late in drafts.
