Ponder to Minny - Mistake??

Minny made a reach in the first taking Ponder at 12. They need a QB, but is he really the QB they are going to hitch their future to? They seem to be in a win now stage still and now they have a project QB on hand......do you still see them bringing in a vet to bridge the gap to Ponder some day?

If they go and get a vet, then no. Cause they do need a long term Qb for the future, and they weren't going to get him after the first. They did try to deal down before the pick as well. No luck. However, if they put Ponder in now, they will ruin him, and totally botch and waste the pick.

Everyone knew quarterbacks would be drafted higher than maybe they should this year. After some initial giggling, it was probably the right move for the Vikings. My only concern would be those shoulder surgeries.

Not a mistake. An upgrade is never a mistake, IMO. Minny was the best place for any of these young QBs. Ponder is a good choice, IMO. He's used to a run first team, he has good accuracy up to 40 yards, and has the best play fake in the draft. West Coast, her we come.

I really do not know much about him. Just did a bit of looking around and at least the Vikes got what appears to their modern day Robert Smith (in terms of brains)

Graduated in 2 1/2 years - already finished his MBA and is working on a second grad degree? Damn.

I didn't realize he had graduated in 2 1/2 years. Wow. Sounds like the Vikes at least got someone that will understand their playbook.

Oh yeah, man. Ponder's a smart guy. However he can definitely be exploited. With good pass rush it's really hard for him to perform. The Packers will still beat Minny 2 times this year, but that's only because Minny's offense wont be able to keep up. Minny's defense will not be able to stop Rodgers, and Ponder's not going to win you a football game on his own, not at the pro level.

if he was "their man" and they "had" to draft a qb this year, they couldn't wait not knowing what buffalo and cincy would do at the top of round 2 . . . all these teams taking qb's early just made the playoff teams from last year stronger by letting all the ot's and dl's drop to them.

You're right!!! Never thought of it that way, but I bet it's the jist of the story on CBS Sportline "Good Teams Get Better", or something in that vein.

Ricky Stanzi was ranked higher than Ponder on many draft charts. Maybe he could have been a better choice?

He's still there....so maybe they can hedge their bets. I do like Stanzi; but he's going to take some time to develop.....but so will Ponder and he won't cost the #12 overall...
