PacMan NOT going to Canada

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Adam "Pacman" Jones won't be playing for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after all.

The CFL team announced Wednesday it has ended its pursuit of the controversial ex-NFL cornerback, one day after multiple reports said Jones would play for the team.

"It is unfortunate that this situation became public; however, our position has remained consistent," Blue Bombers coach Mike Kelly said in a statement. "We will pursue athletes that we believe will contribute to our organization on and off the field.

"We have completed our assessment and due diligence and at this time we will not be pursuing the services of Adam Jones."

Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he had been in "consistent negotiations" with a CFL team, but wouldn't say which one.

Jones is a former first-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans who has twice been suspended by the NFL for off-field incidents -- including for the entire 2007 season -- and was released in February by the Dallas Cowboys.

Before coming to Dallas, Jones was arrested six times and involved in 12 instances requiring police intervention after Tennessee drafted him in 2005. He was suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell for the 2007 season before he got in trouble again.

The cornerback's time with the Cowboys was cut short by six games for another behavior-related suspension, an off-field scuffle with a member of the security detail provided by the team.

Jones, who turns 26 at the end of this month, also drew interest from the UFL, the new four-team league scheduled to begin play in October.

Kind of crazy. the slightest bit of trouble can keep a truck driver from being allowed into Canada, yet if you are going there to play football, doesn't matter what you have done....

Looks like his football career might be over now, and he's only 26, thought he was older than that.

Found this at Bombers no longer want Pacman - Sportsnet.ca

A league source requesting anonymity told The Canadian Press that Jones was having trouble crossing the border into Canada because of his past legal troubles, and that played a major part in the Bombers' decision. Kelly, however, wouldn't get into specifics.

"The information that was provided concerning our interest in Adam Jones was premature and sensationalized," Kelly said.

Pacman isn't a felon, is he? Really haven't followed him much lately, but I don't remember him getting convicted of a felony.

More from above link....

While the Blue Bombers ultimately opted to pass on Jones, CFL teams have often taken on a troubled former NFL star looking to resurrect or continue his career in Canada.

Ricky Williams spent the entire 2006 season with the Toronto Argonauts while serving a suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Former NFL first-round draft pick Lawrence Phillips -- who was sentenced 10 years in jail in 2008 for seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon -- spent time with Montreal and Calgary in 2002 and '03.

Receiver Andre (Bad Moon) Rison spent the '04 season with Toronto despite having been arrested several times for failing to pay child support.

Arctic Dawgs, do you know if there is any truth to this ??

Not too sure. There have been some dandy NFL washouts that tried it up here. Lawrence Phillips I think. Similarly, I think it was Probert (Red Wings ??) who couldn't play any games (NHL) in Can 'cause US customs would not have let him back into the States after his Coke (??) charges. So he stayed in the states the whole time.

Like I said though the suspension rule is called the Ricky Williams rule so that tells you how long it has been around

I was just reading all his run-ins with the law (Wikipedia) and although he has been charged with felonies has pleaded them down to misdemeanors.

This guy is a troubled sole, what a waste.

From the same article
And Jones would be forced to return every punt he lined up for in Canada, where he wouldn't have the security of being able to call for a fair catch. He'd also have to get used to the idea of returning the ball off a failed field goal try in the CFL.

They have a 5 yd rule up here. I remember a PR from the BC Lions (Holt ??) went to the Browns years back. The fans loved him. Must of had something wrong with his shoulder. He couldn't signal for a fair catch. Man, those were some big hits
