Missed FG's....what the hell is going on???

yeah, not buying that one at all Mike....these are not long kicks these donkey's are missing. They are VERY makable kicks. This is their only job.....DO IT!

I hate this saying...their job isn't only kicking the field goals, they also have to do kick offs and extra points. And when they fail, they fail. It sucks. They get more ridicule than any other position.

They have all of the pressure, and none of the glory. The credit still goes to the Qb or Rb who put them in FG position. You don't see Coaches and owners canning Rb's for fumbles or Qb's for Ints. They need to make their kicks, but the kickers would perofrm better if they felt they could be human and keep a job. It's all about the money. They don't make any. The skill positions do so they don't get canned for their mistakes.

Kickers get no respect and it's bullshit! A quarterback gets picked off! Isn't his job to throw passes and touchdowns and NOT GET PICKED OFF! that's their job...DO IT! A running back is supposed to run the ball, score touchdowns and not get tackled. That's their job...DO IT! A wide receiver's job is to catch footballs and score touchdowns. That's their job...DO IT!

If a QB throws a pick in the endzone that would have won them the game, does anyone walk away from him like he has a disease like they would a kicker who missed a field goal? Nope...they say hey man, it's okay, you're still a great QB. When a kicker misses it, they ignore him and he sits by himself at the end of the bench. Kickers FG percentage is often better than most passing percentages at the end of a season anyways. Jeeze, leave them alone. They do a good job and if they miss, it happens.

You aren't seriously comparing a kicker to a QB or a RB are you? Every play there are 11 guys coming like mad dogs trying to stop them. A kicker sits 7 yards back, takes two steps and kicks a stationary ball. Their single job is to kick the ball through the uprights. They convert around 80 percent of the time during the season and now in the playoffs, they can't hit water if they fell out of a boat.

Kicker miss and it's part of the game. I never blamed Norwood. 47 yarder with a lot of time to move and it was close. Don't think he choked, just missed. Kaeding had perfect conditions and missed a 35 and 40 yarder. He had made over 40 straight from that distance. He choked. Rackers choked. Graham choked. You make the short ones when it counts.

And BTW, QBs get more grief than any other position in the game. They also get more glory when they do well. Reason? It's the toughest position in the game and very few are great at it. Same can't be said for kickers.

:crying: Their only job is to kick the damn ball.....yes they kickoff, and they do XP's....that is part of making their damn kicks!! You want to feel sorry for the kickers, fine, but they make damn good scratch to show up, kick a ball a couple of times and go back to the sidelines. It is by far the easiest position on the field......you just have to handle the pressure of from time to time the game resting on your leg.

These kickers have gone soft, and it's costing good teams football games, it's a damn shame. Again, we are not taking long or difficult kicks! We are talking 30-45 yd kicks that these guys should be able to make with ease....they are simply pissing down their legs.

It's funny, but if you have to draw a line where they should make these kicks, I think 45 yards is the cutoff too. Beyond that, I will give kickers some slack, but inside of 45, they should be money, especially when conditions are good.

When Rackers missed the short one to win the Green Bay game, he reminded me of a 25 handicapper playing for a $5.00 skin. He was so quick and it seemed like he just wanted to get it over with and hopefully it will end up good. Good kicker too, but just seemed like he didn't want to be there.

Vinitieri probably got more positive publicity than any kicker in NFL history. Guess why? He made clutch kicks including the best kick I ever saw against the Raiders. 43 yards in a friggin blizzard. Great kick...............

Yep, you want credit, make clutch kicks. You want to be the goat.....miss them, especially in the playoffs.

A ton of pressure is placed on a kicker these days. In the past, points were never so important. Take a look at how many kicks are made from long distance as opposed to previous years.

The league has made it easy for offenses to get between the 20's, and virtually screwed up the game.

the entire fabric of the NFL has been screwed up by rule changes. Drives that used to stall at midfield are now stalling farther into opponents territory, resulting in more field goal attempts, and more importantly, more long field goal attempts.

During this time, nothing has been made easier on the kicker. They simply have to kick from longer distances, and have faster guys coming to block the kicks, and the fear of the dreaded timeout.

Big play touchdowns get more attention than 1 yard runs from the goal line. Missed field goals get more attention than made field goals in most cases ( because they are coming from longer distances)

rule changes are screwing up football, because they are being made for the casual fan.

Yes that is correct. Too much has been said about kickers being easily replaceable these last few years and too much hot-headedness has been used by head coaches and upper management replacing kickers on a whim. The respect has truly been lost for this position in many ways. I kicked in school and let me tell you, it ain't no cake walk. There wasn't another player on any squad I played on who wanted the job. The basis of the original game of American Football coming out of the roots of Rugby was centered around, you guessed it, the Kicker. http://www.17am.com/freepageskickers.htm/

Well if the original basis of the game surrounded them there is even more reason for them to.....MAKE THEIR DAMN KICKS!!!!

Listen...I am not saying a PK is anything close to a QB or RB. I play QB and it is the toughest position because yes, you're looking at all your players on the field, plus looking at the opposition coming at you. Trust me I get a lot of blame for when we play poorly and aren't putting up points. But if they miss a pass, and they go three and out, people get upset. When a kicker misses a field, people are crying for a new kicker. It happens. It's a team sport. If you don't want a game decided by kickers, then take it out of the game. If you say that one missed field goal is what cost you the game, it probably isn't. Somewhere along the line, someone blew their asisgnment and let them get into field goal range or you missed a scoring opportunity that could have been converted into a touchdown. Now as for Kaeding missing three this weekend and Graham missing two. Yes, they screwed up, because that's one too many. Akers missed two against the Raiders early in the season that cost the Eagles a win. But for one missed field goal, that's bullshit to lay the blame on the one play.

By the way, half my team says I shouldn't be back as QB, the other half says I am the only who can get the job done. LMAO!

I can't believe there is actually a debate on if kickers deserve blame when they miss. Wow. I've played soccer since I was 6 so I can kick the ball, however, I never kicked a football until 2007. I had just turned 35 years old. I made a 50 yarder (only once, but still not bad having never kicked a football before). I only have one point. I WILL TAKE THE LEAGUE MINIMUM TO KICK FGS FOR ANY TEAM. If they bring me in for spring camp, I'll guarantee that I'll make 95% of my kicks from inside 45 yards or they can cut me. In fact, if I miss a single FG from inside 40 yards on day one, they can cut me. Anyone with connections to any team want to give me a shot, I'll take it. All of that to make this one point, inside 45 yards there is no excuse for missing. If you do miss one, you damn sure shouldn't miss another one.

lol, not sure any of us can get ya a tryout Bull. And kicking in practice without 250 lb machines running at you is a little different than doing it in real time.....but at the same time, your right, inside 45 yds I have a hard time making excuses for these guys.

Kaeding had made something like 43 in a row inside of 40 yards and today he misses 2. Rackers missed from 34 yards to win the Green Bay game. Graham missed two chip shots in the Jets game. Those should be gimmes. When Kaeding missed his second today, it made me think of Scott Norwood and all the grief and suffering he went though for missing the 47 yarder to that would have given the Bills the title. Other than Charger fans, nobody will remember Kaeding costing SD this game by the time 2010 rolls around because it wasn't a kick to win or lose the game at the time.[/QUOTE]

Right on!
This is the kind of big change I also noticed this year. Many many more missed chip shots. I can't really verify this from stats but I believe the missed long field goals remained about the same.

Revvin' for Seven!!
The only logical reason could be....their balls are now on steroids...they're harder, and bigger pumps. Could be some sort of viagra for balls? This is the best explanation.
