rotoworld,
Cowboys re-signed restricted free agent Miles Austin to a one-year, $3.168 million contract.

Austin is still seeking a long-term deal, and the Cowboys have made it clear that they intend to lock him up. In the the meantime, Austin has been a loyal soldier, attending all spring practices while steering clear of media attention. The Cowboys will be turning their attention to their rookie class soon, so Austin's extension may not happen before the season starts.

I see this as the perfect opportunity for Austin. One of two things can happen here: if he plays exceptionaly well this year, better than Roy Williams, he may have a shot at getting signed again and Roy will bite the dust via trade since he's locked up till 2012. If he plays well and Roy plays decent enough to keep his job, then Austin can prove to other teams willing to give him a deal, that he can ball. The last scenario doesn't play out well for Austin: he gets no field time because of Dez Bryant's presence. I tend to think though that Austin will get his chances to shine this year. Let's remember, Austin is 3 years younger than Roy Williams...

rotoworld,
Cowboys coach Wade Phillips made it sound like Miles Austin's move into the slot on passing downs will be permanent going forward.

"I think he is going to be tremendously dangerous in the slot," Phillips said. "The same things that make him good on the outside make him good on the inside." We've already discussed that we love the move for Austin's fantasy value, but it could also be an indication that Dez Bryant has seized a permanent place in three-receiver sets. Incumbent slot receiver Patrick Crayton and special teamer Sam Hurd won't threaten Bryant's playing time outside.

Wouldn't you consider Austin clearly #1 with Roy and Dez 2A and 2B?

The cowboys got a bargain and deferred the big payout decision until next year. Miles is gambling that he stays healthy and is risking his 20+ Million payout.

rotoworld,
There's no need to worry about Miles Austin being a "one-year wonder," according to the Dallas Morning News' Todd Archer.

Austin grew more and more "unstoppable" as practices went on this spring. His playmaking ability is undeniable, and his after-the-catch skills will be highlighted as he moves to the slot in three-receiver sets. We have him ranked as a top-five fantasy receiver this year.

cbssports.com,
Miles Austin insists he is the same as always, despite his quick rise from relative unknown to Pro Bowl receiver, the cover of the latest Sports Illustrated and Kim Kardashian companion. "I've been doing the same things. It's just that more people are paying attention now," Austin said Sunday, trying to convince reporters and cameras surrounding him that he feels no different from when people didn't even notice him less than a year ago. "I've got the star on my helmet. But that's about it." Yet, Austin no longer comes on the field at Dallas Cowboys training camp without fanfare. There are plenty of cheers when he emerges from the tunnel and catches passes from Tony Romo. "It's like taking somebody working at The Container Store in the closet and now he's the American Idol," teammate Bradie James said. "That's only in America and only on America's Team that you can do that. ... Miles is still levelheaded. Miles is still the same guy. People like him now, more people."

Analysis: Going into his fifth NFL season, the former undrafted receiver from tiny Monmouth College is no longer primarily a kick returner who occasionally gets a pass thrown his way. Austin has emerged as Romo's favorite target, and a problem for defensive coordinators league-wide. Plus, he's in line for a big new contract. The 26-year-old Austin signed a $3.168 million contract in June, but owner Jerry Jones repeatedly has said the Cowboys want to sign the receiver to a long-term deal. Austin finished the 2009 season with 81 catches for 1,320 yards, sixth-best in team history and the sixth-best by any undrafted receiver ever in the NFL. "I pretty much have the same confidence (as before). Don't get me wrong, I was getting more opportunities last year, and hopefully I'll get as many opportunities this year," he said. "Obviously other people are probably going to hold some sort of standard, but my standard really is just work." We like Austin to remain a No. 1 Fantasy WR, and he's worth drafting as early as Round 2 or 3 in all leagues.

Seems to me that if the "owner" wants a long-term deal then he would have offered a long term deal.

Something smells fishy.

Like maybe other teams have been sniffing around and Jerry wants to keep him liquid.

Wonder what going to Buffalo would do to his Fantasy stock?

There is lots of hesitation right now in regards to signing players to long term extensions because of the probability of a lockout in 2011.
