Mike Tolbert ruined Ryan Matthews?

What are the Outlaw thoughts on this one? Matthews was supposed to be a sure fire RB1, and since then Tolbert has managed to royally screw that one up?

Dynasty bump in the road?

I picked up Tolbert in almost every league. Every sunday the projections and fantasy rankings keep Tolbert at the bottom of the production totem pole. But every week I plug that Metal Tonka Truck into my line up and cringe. But at the end of the day (most days) he's made me a proud Momma. His numbers are suprisingly close to Mendenhall in almost all my leagues.

Injury or not, Mathews hasn't matured enough to take the thunder from Tolbert. Even Sproles is being used more to spice up the running game. There is a difference in the way Tolbert and Mathews run the routes. Tolbert runs like a wall, ready and able to run down his tacklers. Mathews runs almost like he's running away from tacklers.

My vote: Tolbert.

Not entirely Mathews fault. I think SD wants to use him more and said so just recently they would but s*** happens. With all the Wr injuries Tolbert and Sproles have to be on the field more to take up the slack. So Mathews coming emergence has been more akin to a submurgence...... to harsh....has been stunted a bit.

Maybe a redraft bump in the road, but not dynasty. If a rookie is productive right out of the box, that's pretty sweet but not something to be counted on.

I wonder what Tolbert and Mathews combined stats are.

Ask and ye shall receive, 1 point per reception, 1 point per 10 yards, 6 points per TD, -2 points for each fumble:

Matthews: 86 car, 379 yds, 2 TDs - 15 rec, 92 yds, 0 TDs, 3 FBLs - 67 pts
Tolbert....: 87 car, 395 yds, 7 TDs - 14 rec, 99 yds, 0 TDs, 2 FBLs - 100pts

Combined: 173 car, 774 yds, 9 TDs - 29 rec, 191 yds, 0 TDs, 5 FBLs

Sproles..: 27 car, 134 yds, 0 TDs - 29 rec, 267 yds, 1 TD, 2 FBLs - 70 pts

Combined: 200 car, 908 yds, 9 TDs - 58 rec, 458 yds, 1 TD, 7 FBLs - 237pts

Now Matthews isnt helping much with his injury BS this year, but you see the stats are identical...till you get to the 5 more TDs Tolbert has snagged.

When people drafted Matthews, it was with the anticipation he would be seeing most, if not all of those 173 carries, and that would have rewarded you thus far with around 167 points. To put that in perspective, Frank Gore is sitting around 155 points this year.

As it is now you never know which one is going to haul the rock from week to week. Matthews certainly was taken way to high in redraft formats. Dynasty the jury is and will be out for awhile, but as long as Tolbert is still there vulturing away scores and carries, Matthews will never have real RB1 value.

It wasn't Tolbert's fault, it was Mathew's injury. If he hadn't gotten hurt, I think he has more than 75% of their combined carries this year. They plugged Tolbert in and he took his opportunity and shinned. Can't blame anyone for the lack of touches that Mathews has had. It was circumstance.

I cant blame a guy for getting hurt playing football. Its an occupational hazard.
Im not burning Tolbert dolls and sacrificing goats over him snaking away carries from Mathews, but he has definately muddied the waters.

I don't understand this thread at all.

Guys we counted on get upstaged all the time.

Did Peyton Hillis "Ruin" Jerome Harrison?

Did Jahvid Best "Ruin" Kevin Smith?

Did Arian Foster "Ruin" Steve Slaton?

May the best man win is the order of business in the NFL and the fact that someone blows a high draft pick on an under achiever isn't cause to blame the best man.

Mathews owners screwed up....Deal with it.

I screwed up drafting Shonn Greene....I'm not blaming it on LT.

You could re-read it or avoid it...

and.....?

How many people drafted Harrison, Smith, or Slaton with high picks?

Yep.

I screwed up drafting Shonn Greene....I'm not blaming it on LT.

You should have known the risk. I took him high too, and spent another high pick on LT knowing one way or another I would be getting at least one, maybe two highly productive backs.

If you were stupid enough to take Harrison or Slaton with a high pick, you knew you needed to snag Hillis or Foster.

If you took Kevin Smith with a high pick you were just plain stupid.

No one saw the Tolbert issue coming with Mathews. Yeah, its a risk you take, but just because you think its a stupid topic doesnt mean it isnt worth talking about.

Why wouldn't you blame Mathews for getting hurt?

Its a high impact violent sport. People get hurt. You speak on the fantasy world every week on the radio. I wouldnt blame you for getting tongue tied or missing a fact. Its an "occupational hazard".

Its not like Mathews got hurt slipping on a McDonalds bag and falling through a glass table, or he missed games because he got caught drunk with his ass hanging out a window in downtown San Diego.

Injuries happen. Of course this thread is geared more toward dynasty leagues, because Mathews was a top 3 pick in most formants. Tolbert did answer the bell, both of them are young, and now the question is will the presence of Tolbert forever render Mathews a RB3, or is this something Mathews will eventually bypass to be the RB1 we drafted.
