Michael Vick gets 4 game suspension; reinstated next week

In a league with such a strict salary cap system in place, I don't think NFL teams even really blink at paying performance-based bonuses. There's so much profit out there that it's not a factor like it would be in baseball, for example.

Yet every few years there are players that make that type of manipulation.

And in other years there are the complaints about owners who disregard their fans to save $ or fail to invest in the team because they know the fan base will still be there.

I say that the league should impose their penalty as soon as the guilty verdict is declared.

If the league thinks a 4 game suspension is appropriate, then that should be applied, but it should be applied immediately.

In the Vick circumstance, that would mean he served his NFL penalty while in jail under a harsher federal penalty.

If the NFL penalty had been harsher, then he would do his time and THEN finish out his NFL penalty.

Waiting until dude has done his federal time and then "tacking on" your piddly NFL punishment is BS.

Please give an example for the "manipulative player" comment? I'm trying and failing to recall any incident that falls into that category.

The second point is valid, especially coming from a Lions supporter. Sometimes though, what appears on the surface to be disregard for the fan base is actually simple ineptitude. Meaning that organizations are honestly attempting to do what's best for the team but just don't have a clue.

To Course Correct back to the thread, I think signing Vick and providing a "Town Hall"-like setting for the press conference would go a long way towards showing anybody's fans that their team is taking a big P.R. risk, but it's in the interest of winning ballgames.

What a travesty considering this league is littered with wife beaters, rapers, and a murderer or two. (and I am a Dog lover)

For all of the above, Vick included, I think if the legal system sets them free, the should be able to work. If and NFL team is willing to hire them, so be it.

And why don't you like rappers? ;) (seriously thought that is what you typed at first)

Personally, I would make it more than a drug violation. Taking drugs is something you do to yourself. Forcing an animal to fight to the death is something you do to an animal that has no choice in the matter.

Of cource, I wouldn't have suspended him until the law ran it's course and a conviction was made.

Okay, fine. As soon as he is charged levy a suspension pending a conviction (effective immediatly). Don't come back 2 or 3 years later with a "Holier than Thou" adding on more. If you do not want the courts to interfere with your refereeing system, You better not be interfering with their system of punishment.

He served his time and should be eligible to play if fit and can find a job

Seems I managed to truncate my initial statement - was supposed to be more along the line that

Yet every few years there are players that complain of that type of manipulation.

Not the greatest at remembering the specifics but wasn't Michael Bush making those type of claims after his rookie season?

This works for me.

However, I would take it one step further if I was running the NFLPA and make sure that it is worked into the future bargaining agreement to a point where certain types of convictions would automatically receive a set suspension. Repeated convictions would receive an increased suspension.

This prevents that jackass Goodell from picking and choosing who he likes or dislikes and handing out suspensions based on that. It also removes the issue of opinions on what offense is worse than others. Misdemeanor gets X games, felony gets X games. No conviction and the player is not suspended.

I like the thinking about the Vikes as a potential landing spot. Question, though:

The Vikes are easily one player (QB) away from a Super Bowl run. Is Vick coming off a two year stint in the pokey that player?

Vick wasn't that player before going to prison, I seriously doubt he became that player after leaving prison. It will take him most of this season, at least, just to get back close to being the player he was, if he can get back to that level.

I agree, which is why the Favre/Vick signing post is so appealing.

Very true! I don't see Vick ever winning the super bowl but I can see him injured when he slows down just one step so that the defense can catch him. That one step slower could be upon him after being out of the game. I do however think he could be a star again at another position other than QB.

He was already slower before all this happened. Remember he broke his leg a few years back. He was never the same after that. Now giving 2 years out of the game, LB will be able to catch him and put a good lick on him. And from last i heard no team is showing any kind of interest. I think he is being considered, by team owners, a PR nightmare and just too many question marks are there if he can perform at all. My thoughts are leaning towards, if he wants to play football next year, he will play in the CFL or the UFL.
