Marshawn Lynch's impact this year

Food for thought here....they signed Jackson to a 4 year deal. Notice please that at no point have they worked for an extension for Lynch who is going into his third year of his rookie contract. I find it interesting to sign a back up for long term.....and not the starter.

This would be a contract year for Lynch then, correct?

What is Buffalo's play here?

Re-sign, release, or franchise?

They would be idiots to release and get nothing. Maybe they're hoping they can negotiate a cheap contract because of his track record.

I would be hesitant to resign him as well. His tenure has not been overly impressive. Now you have to add the fact that he is in trouble off the field. If he moves on he will get another opportunity elsewhere but I don't see other teams lining up to obtain him at this stage - so a wait and see approach is probably best.

  • The Buffalo News reports the financial numbers of Bills RB Fred Jackson's contract extension are in. His base salaries over the four years are $500,000 this year, $1.195 million in 2010, $1.625 million in 2011 and $1.830 million in 2012. He received a signing bonus of $1.1 million and is scheduled to get another $650,000 bonus for making the 53-man roster. He is due a $250,000 reporting bonus in 2010 and gets workout bonuses of $50,000 each year of the deal. With other incentives the total value of the extension is $7.5 million.

If I add this up right it is about 2.5 mil for this year, and guarantees he reports.

The scuttlebutt in the buffalo area is that they will drop him like a hot rock if he has one more issue. Basically you have an NFL franchise that has struggled financially, which is why they are moving some games to Toronto to increase its fan base...the issue is they have really ticked off the Buffalo fan base doing this. So it was a win/lose kind of thing. I firmly believe the Owens signing was purely for the ticket base. So Marshawn is on not so firm ground. I think rhodes and Jackson will see alot of use even after Marshawn returns. As for the future...I think alot of that will depend on what Jackson and co do while he is away. I would not be shocked to see a trade during the season of Lynch if a team is needy and Jackson and Rhodes do well.

Bills | F. Jackson split out wide Sat May 23, 07:29 PM
Chris Brown of Buffalobills.com reports Jackson has been split out a lot, and I mean a lot. More so than he was last year. That's very telling considering the depth the Bills have a WR.
Our view: In the same report Brown states that Dominic Rhodes is being used sparingly while he gets used to the system. The battle between Fred Jackson and Rhodes will determine who wins the starting RB job while Lynch is the first 3 games of the season due to suspension.

I guess I don't understand. Do you take this as a good thing or a bad that they are splitting him out more? Sounds like the want him involved regardless but I was hoping he'd win the back-up spot. The preseason and the 3 game test run will be huge.

Bills | Fred Jackson putting in extra work on receiving skills Tue May 26, 07:22 PM
Chris Brown from Buffalobills.com is reporting that RB Fred Jackson is putting in extra time to work on his receiving skills. Whether it's in the slot or out wide Jackson has seen a heavy dose of receiver work, which is interesting considering the depth that the Bills have at the position already.
Our view: We reported a couple of days ago about the Bills splitting Jackson out wide in addition to handling carries behind Marshawn Lynch. Lynch will most likely miss the first 3 games of the season due to suspension and Jackson is set to be the starter while Lynch is out. When Lynch returns Jackson's fantasy value may not take as big of a hit as some are expecting. We could see Jackson and Lynch lined up in the backfield at the same time, and with Buffalo wanting to run a no-huddle offense they may be passing to Jackson early and often.

CBS Sportsline's Pete Prisco reports Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson makes the most of his carries. He's also a capable receiver. With RB Marshawn Lynch facing an early season suspension, Jackson could get off to a fast start.
