Joe Paterno to retire as Penn State head coach - College Football News | FOX Sports on MSN

Article kinda goes back and forth. Sounds like he retired immediatly and parts sounds like he's in til the end of the year but might be forced to retire by the school . On a side note this definitly will effect this weeks game against Nebraska.

ESPN is reporting Paterno announced he'll retire at the end of the season. I realize he's 84yo and I think part of the way he's dealing (or not dealing) with this is due to his age but his handlers need to stop being his "yes men" and make him understand wtf is really happening. Retiring on his own terms at the end of the season now that he has the wins record is a slap in the face to the kids he turned a blind eye to.

He should step down today if he has a concious at all.

agreed. He needs to step down sooner than later. Even tho he's not charged with anything, will this tarnish his w/l record as not being so great and now will he not be remembered as a great coach instead be remembered as a man who could have or could have not done something that could have made a difference. Hindsite is 20/20, so there really is no way to exactly know if he could have stopped this horrible incident earlier. And who says admin didn't know. Winning is more important. Winning brings in booster money. Its a business and its all about making money. Maybe they got blinded by whats right/whats wrong. Not making excuses but i do believe in all the facts before passing judgement and so far its all one sided.

Agree.

Joe is essentially defining how this is going to unfold. If the university wants to demonstrate that they are in control they dismiss him before the game. They can show that they are not tolerant of the culture of secrecy that is now associated with Joe, and the football program, by taking a stand.

If they let him coach the game, the entire situation is going to shed an even more seedy light as the game turns into a huge Joe Paterno pep rally, where students are seen celebrating and cheering this guy and the university supports him even though this all transpired under his watch. Its almost an admission that Joe is above it all.

The problem they run into is this unhealthy idolatry that exists, which could potentially result in some kind of almost blood lust response by the campus.

The right thing is for joe to step down, hand it over, save the university and program from further disgrace. But, in keeping with his lack of effort of oversight, he is placing his own desires above those of the university, just like he did when ti was time to serve the interests of those little kids.

Reports from ESPN Austin from inside sources indicate the President's resignation will be accepted tonight and the Board of Regents will recommend immediate removal of Paterno to the interim AD, who will officially terminate Paterno in the morning.

His contact was up at the end of this year so a buyout, if any, will be less than $100,000

Joe Pa is doing this thinking they are going to let him slide by. I will be shocked if he's coaching saturday.

fired!? /what the?

That's ridiculous. I've never heard of such a thing. My God Penn State, what are you thinking firing Joe Paterno? Are You Nuts????!!!!!

I guess I should explain. Can't believe I have to though. The school should have negotiated a parting strategy WITH Paterno, not against him. You mean to tell me if the school said "we're going to fire you at 9AM tomorrow unless you retire today" he's gonna say "no"? That's all I'm saying.

Granted they did ask him to retire in 2004. Boy would that have been better for Joe Pa. He was too stubborn and endured broken legs on the sideline and feels the burn of defeat as the result.

I disagree. But by your location I know you'll see things differently as you're much closer to the situation and the Paterno legacy. Planning an exit strategy, as you said, is/was what should have been done when a coaching legend was over the hill and became only a figure head. You fire someone (doesn't matter if they're JoePa or the janitor) who does nothing more than the legal minimum in stopping a child rapist. And especially in JoePa's case who has more hand in PA than anyone I can think of, if he made one call to the police Sandusky is behind bars that night. He had the opportunity to do something to help the kids and he did nothing.

I can't believe people are upset that Paterno was fired.

Do you realize what happened?

Paterno willing kept a guy around who molested children. These guys knew and did nothing they put football, money, friendship over stopping a monster preying on children. Anyone who knew and did nothing needs to go. And Im not worried about how they feel. I don't care how they were fired. I don't care about any of them they didn't care about those kids.

I don't care who you are. If you knew about this and did nothing, you deserve to be more than just fired.
