Dynasty, Fantasy, Reality,

I'm not in a dynasty league but believe I have a dynasty mentality. I'm in a keeper league which is a bit of a dynasty tease.

My question to you dynasty leaguers is...

Is there really such a thing as a dynasty in fantasy football?

Have you been in a league where the same guy took the championship 3 consecutive years or more?...or 4 of five years etc?

Compared to actual NFL dynasties, has anyone matched reality in fantasy?

In Landry, Wahoos has won the last 2 and 3 of the last 4.

Thanks guys.

Are these peoples teams obviously superior or have their rosters been a sort of merry-go-round of players?

Are they active traders or do they ride with mostly same players every year only adding rookies when available?

Sorry for all the questions, but I just find it hard to believe that someone could assemble a team that was SO good that he was able to stand pat (in essence) consecutive years and still bring home a trophy.

RC mentioned LT and he's a good example of how it could be done, but even with LT he must have also had Manning, Wayne and Fitzgerald, or similar, to capture the crown 3 years running.

Brady, Tom NEP QB
Schaub, Matt HOU QB
Charles, Jamaal KCC RB
Jones-Drew, Maurice JAC RB
Tomlinson, LaDainian NYJ RB
Westbrook, Brian SFO RB
Williams, Ryan ARI RB
Bowe, Dwayne KCC WR
Holmes, Santonio NYJ WR
Jennings, Greg GBP WR
Johnson, Andre HOU WR (P)
Marshall, Brandon MIA WR
Gates, Antonio SDC TE -

Here's his notable players. His team is definitely superior than everyone else's. He doesn't actively go out and look to trade which I don't blame him since he is pretty stacked but if you make him an offer he'll work with you. And I have no idea how he got all of these players! lol

Good Grief, Bodey!

What a line up!

If the league I'm in were dynasty, I'd have:

Brees
Vick
CJ
Foster
DJax
AJ
Bowe
V.Davis

Ended up trading them all away in a keeper league to keep draft picks available. Certainly wouldn't have traded if I could keep for nothing or for contract value when I got them. Only Brees, AJ and DJax would have had high contracts.

Okay in our league it looks like one of our coaches (who happens to be a total nut about the sport of football among other things) kicked off our initial draft in 2004 with a squad that took him through the 1st three championships. Then we had a different champion for the next 3 years (same division btw) before he managed to come out on top once again last year!!! The guy is insane how he can methodically put together a strong roster. He basically sold really high on all his studs two seasons ago, ended up with 7 or 8 of the 1st round rookie picks last year and still landed enough talent to win yet again. Plus, his main nemesis in the southern division traded him Roddy White last year! WTF? I can't trade for a ham sandwich when I need one.

That said, is this a dynasty? My argument would be that it is NOT a true dynasty. We've had to make tweaks along the way to trade deadlines, etc that basically keep coaches that end up out of the running from selling out for draft picks. There is so much player turnover from season to season that our rosters rarely resemble the one from the previous season. Of course when you land that stud QB (I nabbed Romo off waivers and he's been on my team ever since), or WR (I drafted Nicks) odds are they are on your roster for awhile. That is the cool thing, you get to research the guys you like and go for them in the draft and basically watch them develop.

The guys roster that won the first three championships doesn't include one of those players today. He totally sold out, and we all thought it would take this guy YEARS to become a contender. Wrong, it took one. At any rate, it is very cool to be able to nab deep sleepers and so forth off the wire, or draft those projects and see if they pan out. From that perspective the dynasty format is great.

Man I've got so many thoughts on the subject that I kind of felt like I started rambling there at the end.

I think it all matters how the managers handles his initial draft and free agent pickups. Some people draft to win right away where as some people draft for the future. Personally, I always draft for the future and lean heavily towards rookies/2nd year players.

Example, our License to kill dynasty league that started last season:

Roster at the end of last season (Inaugural Players)
Romo
Orton
Smith
Clausen
Peterson
Mcfadden
F. Jackson
Spiller
Wells
Nicks
Bryant
M. Williams (TB)
Meachem
Nelson
Morgan
Gettis
Winslow
Daniels

Key Players Drafted
Newton
Kaepernick
J. White
A.J. Green

The majority of my players are young high upside players for my initial draft. I like to focus on who will be producing in a RB/WR 1 position within the next year or so. I also like to work the WW for players that are buried on the bench but have the opportunity to start (Gettis, Morgan, Nelson.) It doesn't always work out right away (Wells, Spiller) but with a bit of time, you could have a producing player in the right situation (Injury, trade etc..)

I find that a lot of converts from redraft lack the patience to keep a true dynasty going, they are looking for instant gratification which doesn't always come with a true dynasty. With that said, there is definitely a fine line you must ride to keep a winning team while looking towards the future.

I very much share your philosophy, Mills, However I am not in a dynasty league. In my keeper league, you cannot afford to draft premium rookies because their draft value stays with them. Ryan Mathews went in the 1st round last year (remember that 60 players are off the board before the draft starts) and it was a good pick....Is he worth a 1st to keep this year? No Way. The owner won't get the opportunity to watch him develop because he can't afford to give up one of the few rounds where you can land an immediate impact player. The dynasty philosophy has to be greatly altered in a keeper league yet the concept is basically the same...Get a stable of players that you can hang your championship on for several years.

Fun stuff, but I really need to be in a dynasty.

The value of ones Dynasty is almost wholly predicated upon the league in its totality.

In other words, the name of your team goes on your headstone. no exceptions.

i've heard of keeper leagues that use the "round value" on players for the following years, but i'm in 2 that don't . . .

1st league started/drafted in 2007 with us keeping 3 in 2008 and adding a keeper each year since.

2nd league I inherited a team this year . . . we can keep up to 3 players, but no players can be kept more than 3 yrs.

are the "round value" leagues more of the norm or are there really just many variations?

btw, the 1st league above has had 4 of 12 teams always in the playoffs, but no consecutive winner yet. the 2nd, I'm new in, but seems no consistency at all in the playoffs or winners, but I plan to change that (won this year) . . . ;)

and bobbeaux's bandits will eventually win all leagues entered . . . lol . . . ;)
