  • -- Jonathan Stewart has Ankle Issue --
    Mon Jun 1, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Rock Hill Herald reports Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart has been sidelined for minicamp practices and OTAs due to an ankle issue.

This guy is FRAGILE

A little quick on the label in my opinion

Freshman: An ankle injury suffered in a game against Montana forced him to miss action in two games. He returned although not 100%.

Sophomore: Just missed 1,000 yards despite missing some time due to lingering ankle injuries.

Junior: No problems/injuries

Senior: Skipped

Rookie: No problems/injuries

Seems there is room for concern about the ankles but has likely been addressed as part of his training regimen. I would not be to worried at this point but definitely something to worth tracking if planning to have him as your #2 RB.

Didn't he have surgery on his ankle or toe before the draft which forced him to miss the combine?

This is incorrect. The reason he dropped in the NFL draft was due to a broken bone in his foot or some such. As such, he missed a great deal of camp....and was not even a major contributor for the first few games. I think the label could be appropriate.

I think he had turf toe actually, and it caused him to miss a lot of training camp, and was nagging at the opening of the season.

Turf toe... was before the season and it did not appear to hinder him at all for the first 2 games against pretty stout D's (SD and Chi) where he averaged 5.4 yards per carry.

I am not willing to simply accept that when he eventually hit the wall, against Minny, on just 7 carrys it was due to lingering injury issues.

Turf Toe in 08, and now this ankle problem in 09.

These are injuries man. Not some random various reasons.

Not an injury if it doesn't impact game day. Not about to count every bump, bruise or malady as an injury. If this report develops into something more it will be different but I have not heard anything to indicate that is the case.

You guys are missing the common link here....all of these issues are ankle/foot related, that for a RB is bad news.....at the least room for concern.

And that turf toe injury was a pretty big deal last offseason as I'm pretty sure it required surgery. I don't think I'd be real quick to simply dismiss 4 issues, all to do with ankles and feet, in the last 5 years.

I was not dismissing just because I do not consider him fragile.

The ankle problem presented itself early in college and as I mentioned appears to have been addressed as part of his training regimen. It has not been an ongoing issue since then.

The turf toe was an off-season concern that was addressed and did not impact his production as was claimed when this sidebar discussion began.

I also stated if the current ankle issue becomes something more than some precautionary measures being taken I could see it being viewed as a ranking factor. If someone has heard an update please let me know because I have not. No update indicates to me it is not something to cause undue concern.

I don't remember him having surgery, but I do remember a lot of talk about that toe.

As I recell, when JStew was drafted, a lot of people thought that he was going to be the man in Carolina. Then once people heard that he had this turf toe problem, it was pretty much up in the air.

Now as the season played out of course we find out who is actually THE MAN in that run game, but can we be sure why?

Did JStew just not make the same impact that DWill did? Was it because DWill wanted it more? Did the injury slow JStew down?

From watching the situation as a DWill owner I can tell you it was a simple case of DWill just putting up dominant performances after another. He just did more with nhis opportunities. I don't think the injury had anything to do with it as the season progressed.

Maybe someone else can chime in, but pretty sure he did have surgery right around the draft. Could be wrong though.

I need to look. I know he had surgery around draft time since he did not work out for teams prior to draft and that hurt his draft value. Although I thought it was the foot in general not just the toe. I need to search this.

Still, as pointed out by Miller....foot injuries...to an Rb are major issues.

DWill didn't really do crap in the 1st portion of last season. JStew had ample opportunities to steal the #1 spot there.

In the 1st 4 games, DWill only rushed for 198 yards and never scored a TD.

Some of that was Steve Smith's fault. The team is not the same with him on the sidelines.....or should I say, Home on the couch?
