I simply don't believe in Williams. He seems like another one of those "potential" guys...you know the ones you keep saying they have potential...but they never really prove it. Of the recievers they have.....Clayton is the most promising in my opinion. He has been inconsistant...but with no real other option....he should be more targeted.

As for FA's out there:
Burress - Nope....I don't think anyone touches him due to court issues.
Harrison - Nope...I think the knee is done....otherwise someone else much more needy would have signed him.
Jones - Interestings...but he is not the steady possession type that Mason was.

Trades -
Boldin - nope ...too costly for Ozzie IMO..but a perfect fit for this team...needing a tough nosed leader.
Marshall - Youth is on his side....but strikes agains isn't. Not sure Baltimore would touch him.

-- Derrick Mason Not Yet Officially Retired --
Mon Jul 13, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
The Baltimore Sun reports Ravens WR Derrick Mason abruptly announced his retirement Monday, a decision that surprised and confused the Ravens. Mason, the Ravens' No. 1 receiver, was entering the final year of his five-year, $20 million contract and was seeking an extension. The Ravens publicly said they were agreeable to a contract, but no deal was imminent. "It's a decision that I've made," Mason, 35, told ESPNews. "If I do change my mind, it won't be because of the Ravens. It'll be because of some other things -- my family and talking with other people. I still got to talk with some coaches over there. As far as financially, I don't think they can do anything to sway me." Ravens officials were caught off guard by the news because Mason had worked out at team headquarters only hours before the announcement. "For any player to retire, he has to send a letter to the NFL stating this," said Kevin Byrne, the Ravens' senior vice president of public relations. "Derrick Mason has not done that." Lamont Smith, Mason's agent, confirmed that the 12-year veteran has retired in an e-mail to The Baltimore Sun.

  • -- Ravens Could Turn to Marvin Harrison --
    Mon Jul 13, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • ESPN's James Walker reports giving a call to veteran free-agent WR Marvin Harrison, who is the best free-agent receiver available, could be a good first step for the Basltimore Ravens in their quest to replace retiring WR Derrick Mason. In the past, signing Harrison didn't make sense for Baltimore because his skills as a possession receiver are very similar to Mason's. But with Mason gone, Harrison, if healthy, has the ability to fill that void. The Ravens will save $3 million off their cap with Mason's retirement, making a strong play for Harrison a possibility.

I disagree. His court issue will fade away. Money ALWAYS gets its way. Even if he does jail, it'll be in the 2010 offseason. I think this is a high quality sign for the Ravens. I also think Ray Lewis will make him mind.

Harrison - Nope...I think the knee is done....otherwise someone else much more needy would have signed him.

Reports Ive read indicate he has worked out just fine. I also hear he wont take the money being offered. If he wants to finish his career in a decent place, this is the spot.

Jones - Interestings...but he is not the steady possession type that Mason was.

Again I disagree. Jones had his head so far up his ass he had to open his mouth to scratch it for a long time. Last year, he finally seemed to "get it" and was a pretty decent pass reciever. You arent asking Jones to be a #1, and his size and blocking ability would work great for the Ravens run oriented offense.

I was high on Mark Clayton prior to this to step up this year, I am even more so now. The problem is, so will others and his value will rise quite a bit.

I do not like Dem Williams. Just way too inconsistent for me.

Clayton has been poised to take that next step for a couple years now but has not done it. As a Mason and Clayton owner (not on the same team/league though) I remain skeptical until he shows me something this preseason.

I agree that Williams is not getting me excited and hope Sgt. is right and they p/u a player like Jones who could fill in now and potentially longer if the kid gets his head on straight. I would not mind Harrison but a signing like Jones seems the better value.

I'm assuming once he gets moved to the reserve-retired list his salary doesn't count against the cap?

Williams was Targeted more than any Ravens WR last year in every game.

:shake: And yet he never has gotten more than 20 receptions in a season.....EVER. 13 receptions last in 7 games. Less than two per game.

Yep....he is a target to get....

This makes very little sense to me.

a) Mason still has game
b) He is still the #1 WR in BAL (which isn't saying much, I know),
3) no lingering injuries?
d) no recent surgeries?
5) No ring?
6) No "after football" plans?
g) He's about to become a free agent after this season? $$$

No way he retires. This has to be some sort of contract ploy.
I'd say he is playing week 1 cus this guy is still too good to quit.

Several media outlets, including the Baltimore Sun believe Mason's retirement may just be a bluff in an effort to get a new contract.

I'm telling ya, this is a decision made in grief.....nothing to do with the contract, one of his best friends was just shot in cold blood......man is not thinking straight and feels walking away is right now.....in a month, he may see it completely different.

Actually, he had a shoulder injury that he is coming back from I believe. Not sure if it included surgery or not.

As for money....he says he is not motivated by money. He is a loyal guy....he didn't want to leave Tenn...but they didn't want to pay him. I don't think he wants to leave Balt. I think something has driven him not to fulfill his contract and retire.

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a conference call Wednesday that he plans to meet with top receiver Derrick Mason soon.
The subject undoubtedly will revolve around Mason's sudden retirement earlier this week, and whether there's a chance he will change his mind before the start of the 2009 season.
The Ravens were caught off guard Monday when Mason, who led the team in receptions and yards in 2008, told jocklife.com that he was calling it quits after 12 seasons. Mason had been rehabbing his shoulder this offseason and was in Baltimore as recently as Monday.

Mason cited the passing of longtime friend and former teammate Steve McNair as a major reason he is leaving the game and recently told ESPN that he is "99 percent" sure of his decision. Baltimore is still taking a wait-and-see approach until Mason meets with team officials and files the official paperwork.
"We have an appointment to talk real soon, either by phone or when I get back next week," Harbaugh said. "So it will be interesting to see where he is at with everything. I know he's going through a lot in the last couple weeks with Steve's situation and those kinds of things. But I'm looking forward to talking to him."

Is another former Titan the answer for replacing Mason? Drew Bennett has been under-whelming so far in his career, can he turn it around at 30?

BAL - WR Derrick Mason moving to Nashville
Source: Drew Forrester - WNST.net
Drew Forrester, of WNST.net, reports retired WR Derrick Mason and his family are moving to Nashville this weekend, according to a source. Mason has had moving companies at his home this week providing him with estimates on the move to Tennessee.

According to one source, Mason said he is 'still in limbo' over his decision to play - or not - in 2009. Mason, however, continues to work out with a popular Baltimore athletic trainer several days a week.

Ravens placed WR Derrick Mason on the reserve/did not report list. This frees up a extra roster spot for training camp. Mason can be activated from the list at any time if he decides to return to the Ravens.
