Super Bowl Safety Tips:
The Super Bowl, and the myriad events leading up to it, will make north Texas the center of attention this week in the sports world. We are expecting there to be record crowds as people from around the world come to the area. With large crowds and high-profile events, however, can come crime and safety issues. To make your visit to the many Super Bowl sites secure and fun we encourage you to take a moment to think about safety issues:
Plan your trips:
Before you leave home double-check directions to the places you want to go, consider alternate routes in case of traffic congestion, and identify appropriate parking options before you get to a venue. You can find this kind of information online for virtually all sanctioned events.
Park safely:
Find a well-lit, well-populated parking area. If you took a few moments to identify parking areas in advance you should be able to find a place where you will be safe as you come and go and your car will be secure while you are away. It is always a good idea not to leave anything of value where it is visible in the car. Thieves look for small, portable, valuable items like I-pods, laptops, GPS devices, purses, and the like. If they see them through the windows of your car they may break-in to steal them. Either leave such items at home or lock them in the trunk of your car. Also, don't give out telltale clues that such items are in your car by leaving cables or chargers in plain view. In short - park safely, hide your belongings, lock your car, and take the keys with you.
One other note regarding parking: if you park in an attended lot make sure that the attendant has some credential or identification that leads you to conclude he actually works there and is not someone trying to bilk you. If you pay a person directly you should get some kind of claim check or payment receipt.
Maintain a discreet profile:
If you are going into crowded venues or will be out at night it is always a good idea to maintain a reserved appearance. While there is nothing wrong with wearing expensive jewelry and exclusive fashions or driving high-end automobiles, at most Super Bowl events such activities will make you stand-out unnecessarily and, consequently, more attractive to pick-pockets, thieves, and con artists. As a related thought, carry only the things you will need for the day. It is unlikely you will be using half-a-dozen different credit cards or important personal documents such as passports, work identification cards, and the like while at a Super Bowl event. Leave them at home if you know you are not going to be using them. Of particular importance is not displaying, either intentionally or by accident, large amounts of cash. Carry only what you think you will need and leave the rest in a secure place at home. By maintaining an "under-the-radar" profile you dramatically reduce the likelihood of being targeted for theft or robbery.
Pay attention to your surroundings and report people, activities, and situations you think suspicious:
As you go about your daily activities, remain alert, even at a well-secured venue, to what is going on around you. Are there people loitering nearby, does someone or something seem out of place, or is there something that for whatever reason does not seem right to you? If so please notify the nearest police or security officer. With your help police and security will keep all our Super Bowl events safe.
Watch your children every minute:
In any large crowd it is very easy for parents to get distracted and to lose track of their children. Please keep an eye on your children, especially the little ones, at all times. There will be many police and security officials at all sanctioned events. Teach your children how to recognize police officers and security staff. If you and your children get separated make sure your kids know to go immediately to the nearest officer. We will do our best to reunite you quickly.
Also, never send unattended children to or leave them alone in restrooms or at exhibits, displays, and the like. There is nothing more important in life than our children and they need our constant watchful eye.
Summary:
A great deal of effort has gone into securing all Super Bowl venues and sites. By taking the ideas above to heart you will help us make this the best, and safest, Super Bowl in history!
Game-day tips:
GPS will only get you so far, so turn off your navigation system. Pre-purchase a parking permit. To ensure you have a valid place to park your vehicle and understand the best ways to get to and from the stadium, you should pre-purchase your parking permit. The parking permits come with the best direction to that parking location. Web sites selling parking passes include - www.parkwhiz.com/super-bowl-parking and www.parkhub.com. Without a parking permit, you will not have access to some roads.
Plan for and expect security delays getting into the stadium. There will be extensive security measures in place on game day. You will go through metal detectors and you will be patted down. It goes without saying that you may not bring any kind of firearm, knife, or other weapon to the game. Also, please do NOT bring large bags or backpacks, coolers, thermos jugs, binocular cases, camera cases, laptops, umbrellas, and the like. Please do not bring camcorders or any camera with a lens over 6 inches in length either. You will NOT be allowed into the stadium with such items. If you travel lightly to the game you and all the other fans behind you will get into the stadium far more quickly.
One last thought: be extremely cautious with your game tickets. Keep them securely on your person and out of sight of others who might try to grab them out of your hands or pockets. It is highly unlikely you will be able to replace lost or stolen tickets at the stadium. And if you are going to the game hoping to find last minute deals, let the buyer beware. If you purchase counterfeit or stolen tickets you may very well lose your money and miss the game.
