If you need a refresher on the rules for the series or a run down of previous match-ups? Here is the rules and history thread:
"Close Calls 2009" - A Sports Outlaw Exclusive
Remember, this is based on re-draft leagues and non ppr scoring.

Today's Match-up:

Thomas Jones vs Darren McFadden

Last Year's Stats:
Thomas Jones - 16 gms - 1,312 ru yds - 13 ru TD's - 36 rec - 207 rec yds - 2 rec TD
Darren McFadden - 13 gms - 499 ru yds - 4 ru TD's - 29 rec - 285 yds - 0 rec TD's

Today's Match-up is between two RB's were on complete opposite ends of the spectrum last season. Thomas Jones was the rejuvenated vetern who exceeded expectations and had one of the better seasons for RB's last year. Can he repeat the performance with even more competition for carries this season? Does age start to catch up with the RB who will be 31 this season. The you have McFadden who came in with extreme hype and failed to live up to it in year one. Injuries played a big part in this, but he also is in a crowded backfield in Oakland. Can DMac bounce back and become the back many expected last season? Will be be able to get enough chances in that crowded backfield? Will Oaklands offense give him enough opportunities to succeed? These are just some of the questions you will need to answer in today's close call.

I am taking D-Mac here. Although he plays for the Raiders if they give him his touches I believe he will produce. And if he gets his touches I think he could be a top 10-15 fantasy RB in PPR leagues. Thomas Jones is on his way out of NY, I think Greene could have the starting job by the end of the season.

I'll be the one to go against the grain (go figure).

TJ is in the better position to repeat than McFly separating that dramatically from the group he has competing.

TJ has already shown he can produce while sharing carries with Washington. Washington's hold out and Greene already having his fingers caught in the D's cookie jar is not a threat. TJ will get his opportunity to set up a trade after the season (if it does not occur this year).

I am a McFly fan (gotta be as I have in in 1 of my leagues) but in a no ppr format alot of his potency is watered down. Add to that M. Bush looking to move into a time share with him and Fargas still lurking in their shadows ready to snag any leftover touches I can see Darren becoming the primary head of the Oakland RB hydra but still lag behind TJ.

This was an excellent choice Miller!

I quite honestly and scared of both.

T.J. seems to be in the best position...as he is a work horse type Rb, with an improving line and a HC that wants to play the run and ball control game on offense. However, my fear is that we will see a repeat of the Baltimore RBBC with Shonn Greene stealing goal line, short yardage and late carries to hold the ball, and Washington stealing carries and passes as well.

D-Mac has incredible talent...but is in an absolutely terrible situation. The HC and OC seem to love the Rbs they have....so don't utelize D-mac near enough. Add to that a bad Qb situation.....unless Garcia takes over....and poor receivers...and this offense just blows. However, with all that the Rushing game has been solid in Oakland the last few years.

Quite honestly I am not sure which will be better. But until I can see real improvement in Oakland...and a real drive to use D-Mac's talent...I will go with Jones.

Some wildcat, some LoNeal lead blocking, less Fargas, better health and additions to the O-line, all point to a better year for DMac. They will be looking for return on investment, and using him more, in more places. Jones, on the other hand, will be losing some additional touches to Washington and greene, and teams are going to load up with 8 in the box to see what Sanchez/Clemmens have. On first look I thought Jones, then camp news, and other variable have swayed me starongly to McFadden. (EC cringes with the thought of Fargas/Dmac in the IBL last season)

McFadden

Rookie Year: 13gms 113 attempts 499yrds 4tds 4.4ypc

With the FA pick up of Lorenzo Neal, and a year under his belt, Big Mac could be in the running for most yards in the NFL.

I think it's a bit optimistic, but if he earns the bulk of the carries, as I have pointed out in other DMac threads, the Raiders can RUN THE BALL! They are actually a very good running team. It's a nice long shot bet if nothing else. I won't say he's going to do it, but I would not just laugh it off either....

Something to keep in mind about DMac is his schedule. Seeing SD twice, along with Balt, Pitt, Wash, Philly, NYJ, NYG, and Dallas. That's 9 games against teams that were in the top 11 for rushing defense last year.

I can't help but think 2009 was Jones's high water mark, plus he'll be deeper in a RBBC this year after the drafting of heir apparent Shonn Greene.

In a keeper/dynasty, the choice is clearly Run-DMC. In a redraft, the choice is not so clear, but I'll assume McFadden's healthy all year and puts up numbers equal to his ridiculous skillset.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a bit biased towards Darren since I still lived in Arkansas during his recruitment period from Little Rock Central H.S. and I had previously tended bar at the nightclub where he got shot in the foot. LOL

Despite the wide difference in last years stats this is amazingly close for me. I expect DMac to get an uptick in carries and Jones to be slowly phased out so it could end up very close.

Despite me being VERY high on DMac this year I am torn on this one. Jones was great last year behind an outstanding OL. That OL is still there. Sure he has more competition, but he's still a capable back. I think he may be under-valued a bit, but also wonder if we are lookign at a Jamal Lewis type situation. Great bounce back year followed by disapointment??? With DMac it's all about the fantasy killer.....UPSIDE! We can't stay away from it.......yet it can kill ya! I think this Oakland team is built to run, and built to run a lot! Bush will see some looks, but they will run enough to have the ball be spread around. This one would depend on how my team looked up to this point, if I had a safe team to this point I'm all over DMac. If I had taken a couple early gambles I'd lay up on this pick and take Jones.....

Since I have to take a pick here, I'm going with DMac by a hair.....a very thin hair.

redraft/non-ppr . . . hmmm, as of today . . . lol . . . i'm going with jones because i really don't think he's done even though he's getting older . . . also, he may or may not be playing for the jets this year, but if he is, they still have a great oline . . . he'll be in more of a committee, but so will mcfadden, and jones gets more of the goal line love (or at least has in the past) . . . i reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow or during preseason . . . lol . . . ;)
