Time will tell of course, but IMO, to seriously think you can pick someone out of the tier 4 players in the 4th round who will perform like Gore is delusional. A long shot at best.

On the flip side, I'm not saying that Gore is any more of a sure thing than guys like Slaton or Williams who are in that same draft range, but to compare him to a 4th round gamble is kind of foolish IMO...............

It's not really that inconceivable. Every year there is a RB or 2 who come out of that 4th round range into the top 5 scoring. Last year it was Thomas Jones, who I and many other Outlawz predicted.

Gore is no more a lock for the top 5 than 1 of these 4th round gambles.

OK, I'm gonna have disagree with you there. Gore is among the best pure runners in the NFL and because SF is not a premier team anymore and doesn't get the TV exposure that other teams get, many fans just look at stats and don't understand the potential of someone of his talent. It has been team failure holding him back, much like Jones in 07. Picking Jones to succeed in 08 was a bit easier because we knew he was a good back but in a bad situation in 07, but the Jets had improved their line and gotten a QB who could open things up for the running game because of the threat of a passing game. Much like the arguement you are making for Forte in 09.

There is a reason that virtually ratings services put Gore in the first round. Worse case for him is 1100 yards rushing, 6-8 TDs and 40-50 catches. He has the potential for more. Guys like Ward offer that as their ceiling and everything has to break right to get there.

I think SF has improved in the areas necessary for Gore to have a big season. Obviously you don't, so he won't be on your teams this year. But hey, if we KNEW exactly how players were going to perform in 09, FF wouldn't be much fun. We get on these types of boards to get different opinions and sometimes we change our minds on a player based on things that "homers" might see in a player because they watch them every week vs someone who doesn't and may not have as much insight on that players raw talents.

Anyway, good luck in 09...............

EF, for this Close Call, I'm on the same side as you. I went with Gore. I just thought it might be helpful to us and everyone involved if we really worked out the details of Gore's situation. You've done a very nice job of making a case for him. I was just trying to keep you going.

eF, an increased rushing workload in SF certainly would indeed be good news. For Glen :coffee: owners.

And in case you haven't noticed, 1,200 is the new 1,000 as far as an impressive rushing total for a RB. It's been that way for a few years now, and I'm not interested in a 1,000 yard back w/single-digit TD's in the middle-late first round, hence the 4th rounder comment.

We'll agree to disagree on this one it seems, so long as you try and corral that period issue.

Nah, not a cheap shot, just some good-natured ribbing.

Trust me, I don't usually kid around if I dislike someone on any level.

I very much appreciate eF and others who at least stick to their guns on something like this that they have a solid, educated debate about. Makes the site tick.

Never happen. Kind of a signature. Adds a little class to the place...............

:)

Certainly, Coffee will get some of those carries. Part of the reason they drafted him was their plan to run the ball more. That said, Gore will still be the work horse and the main beneficiary of the intended game plan............

I'm aware that 1,000 yards isn't the goal of a first round pick but for Gore, it's a worse case where the others mentioned would be more of a best case, so to compare them is not smart...............

Anyway, no big. Just exchanging opinions.............................................

  • -- Steve Slaton Outperforming Reggie Bush --
    Sun Jun 14, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Boston Globe reports the Houston Texans took plenty of heat in 2006 for passing over RB Reggie Bush with the No. 1 overall pick, but as time has passed, their decision to select DE Mario Williams has proven justified. Here is another reason: In 2008 third-round choice RB Steve Slaton, they landed a player nearly as explosive as Bush. Consider this comparison: Slaton rushed for 1,282 yards in his rookie campaign, while Bush has rushed for 1,550 yards over the last three seasons combined. Bush's production in the passing game can't be overlooked, but Slaton looks to be one of the game's up-and-coming stars.
