If you need a refresher on the rules for the series or a run down of previous match-ups? Here is the rules and history thread:
"Close Calls 2009" - A Sports Outlaw Exclusive
Remember, this is based on re-draft leagues and non ppr scoring.

Today's Match-up:

Andre Johnson vs Randy Moss

Last Year's Stats:
Andre Johnson - 16 gms - 115 rec - 1,575 rec yds - 8 rec TD
Randy Moss - 16 gms - 69 rec - 1,008 yds - 11 rec TD's

Today's Match-up is between two top tier WR's. Johnson finally showed his true promise last year with an amazing year as he showed he is truly among the leagues elite WR's. The knock on him through out his career has been his health and the health of his QB's. Can he put together back to back healthy years? Can Schaub stay healthy all year, if not what is behind him may be bad news for AJ. With Moss, he is coming off a down year that most write off due to Brady's injury. With the return of Brady will we see a return to the Randy Moss of old? Will age start to slow moss down any? These are just some of the questions you will need to answer in today's close call.

I have to go Andre Johnson here.

Both Johnson and Moss are near unstoppable. Johnson however is in an offense where he is clearly the go to guy. He has enough talent around him at the other skill positions to keep defenses honest yet he is the clear #1 target. Johnson will always get the lions share of looks and therefore catches. He is much more consistent with his catch totals and yardage.

Moss on the other hand is more of a specialist. He is a great threat in the red zone and for deep passes. Moss will never have as many receptions as Johnson in a given season. In fact his catch total (69) is a distant second to the team leader Welker (112). Moss makes up for his somewhat anemic catch totals with increases in TDs. 15+ tds is expected from Moss.

From a fantasy standpoint I would rather have the steady production of Johnson rather than the feast of famine potential of Moss.

Not sure I completely buy this. Cassel is no Brady.....and in 2007 w/ Brady he had 98 receptions.....AJ, 60 b/c he was hurt in 7 games (missed time 2 of last 4 years). With Cassel, who is not good with the long ball, he had 69. With Brady back do you expect those reception totals to remain anemic?

Moss is just too much of an enigma for me. When he has something to prove he is great. What does he have to prove this year? A Super Bowl? I don't know that matters to him so much.

I'm going to go Moss here. AJ, for whatever reason, has followed the on one year pff the next routine......he just can't string two healthy years back to back. If he plays all year, he's money. However, even in a bad year, Moss scores more TD's than AJ does. With Brady back, Moss will see his receptions and yardage rebound and his TD's spike as well. It won't be 2007, but 85-90 rec, 1300 yds, and 15 TD's is a prett safe bet IMO. If I can get that, I'll walk away from the potential of AJ and in turn stay away from his freakish odd year jinx.

This one's solely based on the governing format for the Close Calls: Non-PPR. In a reception league, Moss would likely have to outscore Johnson by about 6 TD's to cover the discrepancy between their yards and catches. Not so at all in a non-PPR situation like this. Moss will have 4-5 more TD's than Johnson which should be the deciding factor.

Moss has only had 2 100 catch seasons in his career. In 2003 he had 111, in 2002 he had 106. The 98 catches in '07 seems to be more of an abboration than a potential trend. With Welker in the slot and proving to be such an effective possession receiver I doubt very seriously that Moss will approach 100 rec while with the Pats. You know good and well Belechek is not going to abandone his effective offensive strategy.

Johnson has had 100+ rec 2 of the last 3 years. The exception being the injury shortened '07 where he only played 9 games. I know injury is a big concern for Johnson but in past close calls it has been suggested to not factor injury as you can't accurately predict a player getting hurt. Barring injury Johnson is much more likely to post 100+ recs again and being the beast he is, much more yds than Moss.

The only advantage Moss has is the total tds.

Moss.

Among active receivers only T.O. has more TDs than Moss and he'll likely take the lead this season. Plus the Patriots have the schedule advantage. Interestingly enough the Texans and Pats face off in week 17.

I voted for Andre because I think his best could still be ahead of him while I expect we've seen the best that Moss has to offer. I expect that it's downhill for Moss with last year being the start of the slide.

I'm back :)
i love both of these guys, but i'm taking moss first. with brady back this year, that offense is going to be busy!!!

My vote goes to Moss.

Both are sure-fire WR1s but the potential of 15+ TDs from Moss is too good to pass up.

Andre is a beast but nobody can stop the vertical threat that Moss brings to the field. I'm convinced enough that Brady is healthy and those two have a solid rapport together. It's tough to double Moss because there are so many ways the Pats can beat you. I'm expecting a huge year from Moss...he's a freak.

Since it will be asked, adding in the expected increase:

Andre Johnson - 16 gms - 115 rec - 1,575 rec yds - 8 rec TD
Randy Moss - 16 gms - 109 rec - 1,508 yds - 20 rec TD's

And that extra 12 TDs is the clincher. Somewhere, some place, there is a team holding Fitzgerald, Johnson, and Moss....and that fantasy team must be AWESOME.
