Waffling on a contract for arguably their best defensive player (Leon Hall).. Letting arguably their 2nd best defensive player walk in free agency (J. Joseph).. The Palmer fiasco.
I mean, I totally understand being stubborn due to personal principles, trust me. But it can be a fatal flaw sometimes. This could've been nipped in the bud the day Carson went in and said "please trade me". If that would've occurred before it hit the media and caught fire, I'm quite sure that Cincy could've got at least a 2nd & 4th from one of the teams that reached on 1st round QB's in this draft. Problem is, once brown decided Carson was serious, his trade value was next to nothing because everyone knew the story.
Re-signing Benson was ill-advised, both due to declining skills and continued knuckleheadedness. Especially when you have a much more talented young guy ready to take over in Bernard Scott. Drafting Green and Dalton, at least to me, was actually solid. Green is a legit #1 WR, and Dalton is a high character winner who will lead this team to the playoffs someday if they ever improve the rest of the team. Change is needed though. Obviously. Marv and the front office can't live off of 2009 forever.
Remember 2009? 2 seasons ago? When Cincy swept the AFC North and made the playoffs?
Best case for this year is: Dalton and Green develop an immediate connection, the other young WR's (Shipley, Simpson, Caldwell) and Gresham help out Dalton, the O-line prevents Dalton from getting killed by week 6, Johnson and Dunlap keep their heads on straight and capitalize on their D-line skills, Rey Rey stays healthy and takes that next step, Hall gets some help in the secondary, and they split with the Browns and beat 1 of the 4 AFC West teams. Unfortunately, if all that happens, the ceiling here is probably 6 games.
Best case for the franchise would be, can the coach, front office, and sell the team to a competent owner; go 1-15, then deal the 1st overall pick (Luck) to Buffalo for their entire draft (a la Ricky Williams), and start a real rebuilding effort.
Yes, I strongly dislike the rival Bengals.. but even this opposing fan doesn't like seeing that level of dysfunction on any NFL team. It's not good for the league overall.
