Chris Wells Out Till June 13th

Like all incoming Ohio State NFL players, Chris Wells won't be available to the Cardinals until June 13.Analysis: Wells is required to wait until OSU holds graduation. He'll be there for all of training camp, but Tim Hightower will be Arizona's first-team tailback deep into the summer. "There will be a lot of ground to make up," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. Wells will miss 14 days of voluntary workouts.

Can someone tell me why they have to wait?

It's a rule of some sort that I've yet to figure out. Same thing happened with Flacco last year but it didn't seem to hold him back.

It's called........graduating from college.

If you landed a job a few weeks from graduation, would you be - by rule - walled off from interacting with them until graduation? Unlikely, but that's what some football players face and I haven't heard a good reason as to why.

Part of the price of being an athlete. You don't see tuition paying construction engineer students being denied the opportunity of accepting gifts from well minded alumni either.

I think it benefits both sides. The school gets a marketing bonus of having the student go all the way through graduation. the kid gets to enjoy something a lot of us consider worth celebrating before entering the real world (Sure Wells is not exactly in the entry level position most college grads are facing but for each star there are a dozen players that will go to a training camp and be cut loose before the season ever begins who will)

I would guess it's a school-by-school basis. If he would've redshirted at some point and already graduated, he would be fine.
It's not a factor if one doesn't care about receiving a diploma/degree. LOL

I would think since he'll be playing home games in the University of Pheonix Stadium, they would've just transferred his credits and hooked a brutha up.
It's probably more prestigious than OSU anyway...

Honestly I'd tell OSU to take a hike. In Wells' position, his signing bonus sets him up for life if he's smart about it. What does a college degree now offer him that one earned later at another school won't?

NFL rules state that a drafted player may not join their team until after the school's graduation date. This has always been an issue for schools with late dates like OSU. It is even more a joke for an underclassman that leaves early.....as they still have to abide by this rule even though they are not graduating anyways.

I don't know why the NFL made this rule. It's not like the NCAA can say this or that player can report to his new job when other employees are required to.

As I remember it...and don't hold me to this...

The thought was it was for the players. The expectation being that players need to stay in school to finish their degrees. So by putting in this mandate...it allowed rookies to finish out..and not be subject to fine of issue from a team if they missed time. Again...I am not positive on that...but that is the spin I think I remember hearing.
