Charlotte Newspapers saying: Draft QB Cam Newton.

Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer is the latest Carolina columnist to support Cam Newton as the No. 1 pick in the draft. Analysis: The Observer's Tom Sorensen came before Fowler, and beat reporters Darin Gantt and Joseph Person also support the idea. Or at least have predicted it. "You can't pass that up," writes Fowler of Newton's dynamic, potentially franchise-saving talent. "This isn't complicated. Grab Newton at No. 1."

I think they should draft someone else if they can't trade down. Take your chance on getting the first pick next season (if there is one), then take Luck with the first pick in 2012. Luck has a much better chance of being a franchise QB to me.

Here is some food for thought:

The Gaston Gazette's Steve Reed reiterated his belief that free agent QB Billy Volek could follow Ron Rivera to Carolina once free agency kicks off.
Reed appears to be the one local writer who believes the Panthers' interest in Cam Newton is more smokescreen than genuine. Be it Newton or Jimmy Clausen as the developmental QB, Volek could be brought in as a "mentor" in Rob Chudzinski's offense. Though he'd be a bottom-tier NFL starter, Volek would actually be welcome news for the production of Steve Smith in 2011.

Volek would be a great option for fill in. Not a great Qb, but has tools, and can be a bridge for whoever they decide is the Qb of the future.

Honestly i think that with so much talent on defense, the RB and WR position in this draft, that it would be stupid for any team to draft a QB in the first round.

It's a difficult call, so many teams need QBs. Do you draft a QB this year in what is considered a poor crop or wait until next year and see if the prospects are better?

i think the key is 1st round or not . . . they really shouldn't when they are going to be developmental qb's . . . better to grab an impact player that can start this year in the 1st.

Not saying don't draft one, just think drafting one in the first round is wasting a pick and not getting a quality RB, WR or defensive player. Drafting a QB in the 2nd and latter rounds makes much more sense i think. Honestly, do you think any of these QBs are top notch quality and deserve a 1st round pick? I don't. And IMO only 5 are 2nd round worthy.

I agree with both of you, none of these QBs may be first rounders value wise. Trouble is, that's it's a total crap shoot. A couple of these QBs will end up being good but no one right now can say which two they are.

Your right, such a crap shoot. Who knows Locker and Stanzi might be the only two that end being good and the rest are bust. Gabbert could be the next Klingler. Gunslinger playing in a spread offence in college then just never really did live up to the hype and faded away . Cam could be the next Lefty.

It could drive a GM batty. It's hard enough to try and pick the right one now. Then you have to consider that some of these guys could boom or bust solely on which team ends up drafting him. Depending on the situation and circumstances they end up in, being selected by the right or wrong team could be the boom or bust factor for a QB.

Basically thats why i am saying drafting defense, wr or rb in the first round sounds more like a safe bet.

My QB rankings have Cam at the top of the list. He's done nothing to show that he's nothing but a superstar and I think Carolina would be stupid to pass up Cam. The upside absolutely crushes, drowns, desentigrates, any downside that you can throw out there for Newton. That team has a new coach and needs a new face. Cam is the guy.

Good answer, but still don't beleive the hype about him. Gotta wait and see it for myself. If i am wrong i will be the first to admit it.
