The Bears have released WR Rashed Davis, the Chicago Tribune reports. With Davis released, Dane Sanzenbacher seems to have sewn up a spot in the Bears' wideout corps along with Brandon Marshall, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett, Alshon Jeffery and Eric Weems.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he expects five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith will return to practice Sunday and play in the Sept. 9 season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Redskins RB Roy Helu returned from two sore Achilles' tendons to rush for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and catch two passes for 34 yards in the Redskins' preseason finale Wednesday night against Tampa Bay. An incredible performance by a banged up Helu that adds more ????? marks to the redskins RB situation.

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks played for a short time and caught a pass against the Pats in the last preseason game. Looks like he will indeed be ready to go so those who had the cajones to pull the trigger in early drafts, thumbs up.

Giants RB David Wilson managed 13 yards on eight carries and a nine-yard reception in the Giants' preseason finale Wednesday night. He'll wrap the preseason with 28 runs for 131 yards (4.68 YPC) and five catches for 61 yards.

The Titans took wide receiver WR Kenny Britt off the Physically Unable to Perform list on Tuesday, clearing the way for him to practice with the team next week. It also clears the way for a possible suspension so continue to hold your breath.

Here is one to ponder: We all are driven crazy by Redskins RBs. But what about Patriot RBs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen. Both are going late in drafts, Ridley first Vereen later so nobody is taking a big risk but if you guess right it could be a great boost to your team. This choice was not helped by the fact that both are dinged up and the Pats are very tight-lipped about injuries.

I have Ridley in three leagues, but he is my #3 rb. So to me its low risk. I would say high side the NE rb is #2 value at best. I don't see Vereen getting consistant carries, and instead may be the Woodhead/Faulk flex ppr darling of the future.

That's what's nice about both these guys and especially Ridley as a third back he could really outproduce his roster spot on your squad. I have him as a third RB on my SOFFL2 squad.

Running backs coach Alex Van Pelt admitted that Cedric Benson won't be used on third downs. Van Pelt has plenty of options on passing downs and Benson's woes as a blocker/receiver rule him out. John Kuhn is extremely reliable, Brandon Saine has the size and Alex Green has the most upside. There's no clear winner here just yet.

I would expect Kuhn, for the blocking more than anything else. They want to keep Rodgers up on his feet.

Pats RB Stevan Ridley (undisclosed issue) returned to the field for Friday's full-pads practice session, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. With Shane Vereen still missing from practice, Ridley's chances of heading the Patriots' backfield, at least out of the gate, seem to be getting better by the day.
