Bills Want To Give RB Fred Jackson Extension.

Fred Jackson's monstrous season was cut short by a fractured fibula, but the Buffalo Bills running back is back in action and general manager Buddy Nix intends to keep him in the fold. "Fred and I have talked," Nix told the team's official website. "We want to extend Fred. I'd like for Fred to finish his career as a Bill. He's meant a lot to us. I've got great respect for him. We do want Fred back and we do intend to try to work out a deal with him. I've told him that. What we said is what we're going to do."

It relegates Spiller to an important handcuff or at best flex play until Fast Freddie breaks down again next season and he will break down.

Going into last year Spiller was a big question mark. The year before Fred Jackson really came into his own late in the season surging into starter status for those paying attention. But Spiller had been around and only had shown some flashes as a third down pass catching type of back and was only used sparingly in that role and not really as a backup RB. Spiller was used last year in the begining in this specialist sort of role and not getting real backup, let's give our starter a rest, type of carries. Jackson was the starter and the workhorse and Spiller just got his touches in certain situations, The 3rd down guy. Most of us, and the football world as a whole didn't consider Spiller capable of full time production.

But, Spiller was a nice surprise, and proved very capable in a full time role for the rest of the season. Now maybe he still may not be capable of doing it full season but he did great with the added carries, a full workload of touches, through the rest of the season. This discovery was very good for the Bills team as a whole as Spiller as a backup was a bit of a worry going forward. The Bills were wondering if they needed another RB going forward to fill the backup role and they found out that Spiller was much more of a total RB than they thought. I think Spiller's real football stock has really risen a lot in Buffalo, the change from a 3rd down specialist to true Backup RB status is huge.

Okay for those of you who expect Fred to break down again.... :bs:
Kid is money, he may be turning 30, but he has little to almost no mileage on him. He was who made Lynch expendable, and was always the target in Buf. to be the main back, with Spiller being change of pace. I think of the two Spiller will be the most fragile if put in every down situations. Yes, Buffalo should resign him, and use him more than Spiller as he is more capable and for that matter a better Rb.

but if not, there are alot of teams out there in dire need of a back and this kid is money.

i know you mentioned this, but that "kid" is 30. and mileage or not 30 is 30. im not 30 and never got to run in the nfl at all... but everything is harder than it was. everything is slower than it was. granted i dont take the supplements and/or drugs these guys do but if you're used to that i assume there is a slow dropoff anyway

Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said RB Fred Jackson (leg) has been medically cleared for all football activities. Jackson will be able to participate in offseason workouts.

If you can resign Jackson to a short term deal at reasonable money you do it.....but anything more than 2 years is just a bad business move. Freddy Jackson is a very good back, but as gizzil stated, 30 is 30....anyways you spin it, it's still 30! His time to be a featured back running short.

:hmmm:

I wonder what kind of a split we are looking at ?? 60/40 or something that will change game to game, depending the the weekly game plan

(Rotoworld) Coach Chan Gailey echoed GM Buddy Nix's sentiments that C.J. Spiller can be a workhorse back in the future. Analysis: "He could be an every down back. I don't see any reason he couldn't carry 20- 25 if he needed to," Gailey said. "But he's a valuable, versatile player. He can play wideout. We're fortunate to have two very good backs. I'm going to try to make sure we keep them fresh and wear 'em out at the same time." Spiller isn't going to ascend to the No. 1 role with Fred Jackson returning, likely with an extension in tow.

What Phicinfan said.

he's money

on my own note - it sounds like the Bills are trying to keep the kid happy and are looking at structuring a long-term contract that can be beneficial to both sides.

I'm more concerned with the QB in Big B.

same as before, he won't get touches unless Jackson is tired or needs a blow. Or they may move him back out to wr again for a while, especially if they don't resign Stevie

I would add

If the Bills stay in the hunt for the post season, the Bills will probably try to rest the kid when they can.
The flip-side is he'll play as much as they need him.
And that's alot

If you mean "same as before Jackson got hurt" I disagree. Spiller will get a lot more touches now, but an interesting point was made. Some of those could very well be as a "Slot WR" with both of them on the field

We can disagree. The only way spiller's touches increase is as a wr or slot guy. Fred is the starting back, if he is resigned. Gailley has already said as much.
