American Chronicle | Football: Permian's new schedule includes team from Washington

Permian head coach Gary Gaines has tentatively scheduled Bethel, a Division 4A school located in Spanaway, Wash., to play the Panthers at Ratliff Stadium during Week 1 in 2010 and 2011.

"They came out of nowhere," Gaines said. "And I don't know much about the school, but they want to come to Texas."

For starters, Bethel has a listed enrollment of 1,450 students, a number that only counts 10th through 12th grade. Throw in the freshmen, and Bethel head coach Gavin Kralik estimates that the school would have an enrollment that mimics the lowest numbers of Class 5A school in Texas.

Last year the Braves finished off a 9-2 season by bowing out to Skyview 40-21 in the first round of the playoffs. In five years at the school, Kralik has a 30-21 record at the helm.

And there happens to be a precedent.

Last September, Bellevue (Wash.) made the 2,456-mile trip down to Houston to take on Katy during the non-district schedule. Katy drilled Bellevue, a team that has won seven straight state titles in Washington, 35-17.

:shake: I like this, but I don't. I wish we would send someone else. Bethel is a talented program, but never won it all. They also lost a chunk of their enrollment to a new high school in the district.

This is from the Tacoma paper:

The Panthers were 8-4 last year under head coach Gary Gaines, who was the head coach at Permian when Bissinger wrote his book. Gaines left the school in 1989 and spent the next two decades coaching at Texas Tech, Abilene High School, San Angelo Central High School and Abilene Christian University before returning to Permian in 2009.

Also, I wonder if Bethel coach Gavin Kralik is related to former UW WR Joe Kralik.

Edit: yep, his brother, he is a fire fighter in Austin according to the article.

Permian will likely crush them. I fully expect Gaines to build another bunch of killers out there really quick.

^ No question they will destroy them. Even if we sent our top tier teams like Skyline, Bellevue, or Lakes, I still don't like our chances. Maybe Bellevue from a half decade ago when they were beating De La Salle and Long Beach Poly, but not now.
