Benson appears to be done with the Bengals

Unless the Cincinnati Bengals know something he doesn’t, running back Cedric Benson will be playing elsewhere in 2012.

Benson has led the team in rushing for the past four seasons, including three consecutive campaigns of 1,000-plus yards. Cincinnati, though, has made no effort to re-sign Benson as he heads toward unrestricted free agency on March 13 when the NFL signing period begins.

“We haven’t had any talks about a new deal, re-signing or anything like that to my knowledge,” Benson told me and co-host Ross Tucker on Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I’m not sure where things are laying up there in Cincinnati.”

This should not come as a surprise to most. Benson does not really fit into Gruden's scheme and this is a spot I look for them to try to upgrade via the draft or free agency.

As for Benson, not sure what is going to be next for him. He still has some value, but I do not feel his is a feature back any longer. He would be best served to find himself in a time share situation or even in a high profile back-up role. Baltimore may be a good fit behind Ray Rice with Ricky Williams retiring.

I think this will be good for Cincy. I like that thought of helping Beanie out but doubt that will happen.

Perhaps Bernard Scott gets more involved in the gameplan next year? ;)
He's a role back and not much more. I think they had hoped he would have taken a bigger role already, just hasn't worked out that way. They will bring someone else in.

Here is a great example about drafting RB's in the first round.

Remember when Benson and Cadillac and Brown went in the top five in '05?

Did they save the team that drafted them?

Injuries have had their say of course. And situations.
maybe should do this in another thread about drafts.

I have heard numerous times that most first round rbs fail, or at least don't live up to the draft slot taken. There are a few of course that do. Emmit Smith comes to mind. But most don't. I will have to look around, but I am pretty sure backs someone has a story saying backs taken in 3rd to 4th round last longer and do better.

trying to not stray too far off topic of this thread -
I'm still to this day, not over The Tuna passing on St. Jackson, instead settling for Julius Jones.

time to pursue Tolbert
Not sure I really like that move. I don't see Tolbert as a great fit in Gruden's offense. Maybe as a secondary back, but if they went into next year with Scott and Tolbert I'd be a little worried and kinda ****ed.
