Bengals sign safety Roy Williams

hmmm, to be honest, not sure what to think of this one......

I think I like it, guy is fun to watch, but did he ever learn to cover?? Marvin usually leans towards the guys who can do both.....but Zimmer coached him in Dallas so he must like the guy.

What the hell....dropping Jones today saved some money, at least they are spending it...

Nice grab. Although he's not the greatest coverage safety in the business, he'll strike fear into the heart of anyone in the slot.

Not sure what they will do with him. He cant cover. Be ready to enjoy the site of MoMass, Shaun McDonald, Limas Sweed, and whatever junk the Ravens trot out there running free in your secondary.

Well, at least they have someone to keep it strong on their current and potentially future problem children.
One false move by C.Henry in practice, and he gets the T.O. horsecollar treatment.

Seriously, if Cincy does what Dallas never did, i.e. leave Roy in the box to stuff the run and occasionally blitz, he'll realize his potential. Dallas' mistake was they tried to change him completely from what he was in college. He didn't cover much then, so why would you even put him in that position consistently?

they wouldve been FAR better off using that money on keeping their own williams safety a year ago rather than letting him leave.

Whah? How the hell did this happen? Did he boost a liquor store we don't know about yet?

don't get me wrong, I love Madieu....but the first time he makes a Pro Bowl he'll still be 3 more shy of what Roy accomplished with Zimmer as his DC.....

They are completely different players, but I think Roy can bring a toughness that this young secondary needs. They have nice depth at S, but no real enforcer....now they have one, this move is growing on me already.

everyone knows that roy shouldnt have made most of those pro bowls. the guy gets consistently burned over and over again in coverage. he is a big hitting linebacker who is slotted out of position at safety, and he is not fast enough or smart enough to cover anyone that runs a route near him. ocho cinco is going to have a lot of fun burning this guy every day in practice. maybe this move will get him going finally.

If they pair him with a free safety who specializes in pass coverage, he'll be fine. For the 15,000th time, he's NOT a coverage safety. I'm sure at this point even he'll admit that.
Everyone who has half a clue understands that point now, it's been beaten to death in most media outlets, ad nauseum.
He also fills a serious need as a locker room presence, which shouldn't be underestimated.

I don't think they are bringing him into cover.....they have two first round corners and a FS for this. He did quite well under Zimmer and I disagree that he did not earn ALL of those Pro Bowls, one or two were on reputation, the rest were earned and built that reputation. You can't get to a Pro Bowl based on reputation until you do it a few times...

Can he cover? no.
Can he kill a defensive stand with a penalty? Always
Can he miss way to many tackles because all he knows how to do is launch himself for a big hit? All the time.

Enjoy this epic failure :)

hes a punk, not a lockerroom presence. i wouldnt call him a cancer by any means, but i sure wouldnt look forward to him commanding my defense. and obviously hes not a "coverage" safety, but the last time i checked, all safeties play out in space in the area where receivers go out for passes. they do things like double team over the top or cover a slot guy or cut off the deep ball. williams has been and will continue to be burned. in the nfl, one blown coverage by a safety is a TD against most teams. i figure most games he'll either get burned on a game-changing long play and/or he'll horse collar a dude for a 15 yard "roy williams" penalty and maybe a broken collarbone. i wouldnt want any part of him on any team i care about.

no reason to beat a dead horse, or a dead roy for that matter. just my opinion and obviously will agree to disagree here.

Sums it up very nicely. For more detail, see Da Bomb.

Fill me in then.....besides his coverage issues, what makes him a punk? What instances has he been a part of that makes him a cancer?? Seems to me if he's a cancer and a bad presence, his DC from that time would not go out of his way to pair back up with him.....

Fill me in, how was this guy ever a cancer??

Don't get me wrong, there are things that worry me about him, but it seems like his play and numbers got worse the longer he was in Dallas, and dropped off after Zimmer left. You would know better than me, but seems they tried to make him something he's not.

I understand he can't cover well, but to be honest, neither did the SS's last year in Cincy and it worked out OK due to scheme. The defense was better than it has been in some time. I'm not thinking we just got a pro bowler, but the contract is incentive driven which hopefully pair with Zimmer will light a fire under his ass.....Also consider the division he just got signed into, not exactly an air it out division, it's a smash mouth, power running confrence and his in the box play may fit in well.

As far as the 15 yarders....maybe him and COC can wage a competition......and his tackeling tactics may come in handy against the Steelers twice a year ;)

I'm going to keep an open mind on this one and see how he does.
