Bears to/ should Sign Caleb Hanie to a second round contract tender?

The Bears will need to extend a second-round tender to restricted free agent Caleb Hanie if they're serious about retaining him. If the Bears only gave Hanie a "low" tender and another team signed him to an offer sheet, they'd receive no compensation. The second-round tender should be valued in the $2 million range. It's an affordable number for a quality backup who nearly led a comeback in the NFC Championship Game.

One of Rams favorite QBs might get a serious audition as a starter.

Its something the Bears need to do. QBs who "get" the Martz offense arent all over the place. Hanie needs to be retained.

Agree, they have to protect this kid. Todd Collins is not the answer :xpuke:

I disagree, only becaus the Bears gave up two 1st round picks to get Cutler, unless you are predicting injury issues.

Cutler wasn't the answer in Denver and Cutler isnt the answer in Chicago. IMO he's overrated and really showed what kind of character he has. He's not a team player. He showed that in the championship game. Barring something like losing a leg(and even then he could have used crutches) or a broken neck, he should have been on that field with the team. He showed no heart by staying on the sideline. Hainey was called upon in a clutch and almost pulled it off. Lack of experience was his downfall.

For something like that to happen, Hanie is going to have to play LIGHTS OUT. Like throwing 5 TDs and beating the defending Super Bowl champs by 30 points at home after supplanting Cutler for a few games due to injury. Jerry DeAngelo and Lovie Smith have Cutlers back all the way.

And why do they have Cutlers back so much? They really have that much faith in him? I think he's overrated big time. He's a top notch #2 but a bottom of the barrel starter. That Bears D was getting compared to the '85 Bears team and they won it all with a mediocre QB (McMahon) yet this team with what i do consider are stronger at QB than the '85 team won't win it all. I sure wouldnt want to depend on him to bring my team a championship.

M.Martz offensive system is a complicated one to learn and J.Cutler was finally getting the hang of it towards the end of the season.

Say what you will about Cutler he got the Bears to the NFC championship game did he not ??

No he didn't. That defence got them there. And almost took them to the big game. Where was Cutler while that was happening? Thats right he was too busy hiding on the sidelines. That defence was/is good enough that even Hainey with limited exp was almost good enough to win it.

Because you don't keep your job trading away two #1s for a player you replace by a late round draft. That is why.

I'm guessing you are one of those that predicted the Bears would lose their last 6 games of the year when their schedule got tough. We they went 4-2 not needing to win the last one. Cutler had a qb rating over 100 in all 4 of those wins and the defence gave up an average of 24 points in those 4 wins.

You can listen to Deion sanders all day and form your opinions, but try and avoid just making stuff up.

That said, absolutely sign hanie as the backup and to a tender that will keep him in Chi. One of the large failures of Bears management was thinking that Tom Collins was an NFL caliber backup. They saw what he could do (or not do) against the panthers yet kept him in there anyway. pathetic.

Cutler will stay because of the price they paid for him. Hanie will be the #2. Todd Collins is out and should retire. Maybe they draft a QB in the later rounds and try to mold him for a couple years.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler received a painkiller shot at halftime of the NFC title-game loss Jan. 23, a Chicago newspaper reported Thursday.

Cutler had come under criticism after the game from players, fans and media who believed he didn't try hard enough to play through a knee injury. But a source told the Sun-Times that Cutler insisted on receiving the injection to ease the pain so that he could attempt to play in the second half.

Cutler injured his left knee early in the second quarter of the playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers. Cutler headed to the locker room ahead of his teammates, and the Bears medical staff confirmed their initial assessment.

Cutler returned to the field in the third quarter but left the game after a three-and-out series.
