Rice has a ton of doubters. However I think with Flacco's improvement and reports of him putting on a bit of muscle make me feel comfortable with him as a sleeper of sorts.

Ray Rice has added noticeable bulk "across his chest and lower body." Rice has been taking first-team reps and is being counted on for a bigger role this season. The extra bulk should help him stay healthy through a long season of hits.

Willis McGahee (ankle surgery) resumed practicing at Ravens' minicamp Tuesday, but worked with the second-team offense. It's still early, but Ray Rice appears to have the inside track on the starting tailback job. John Harbaugh didn't seem pleased with McGahee's prior absences from voluntary work, or confident about his health. "I don't know. I have no idea where he's at (in his recovery)," the coach said. "It's the first day he's been here in a week and a half. I can't gauge it."

See, this gets back to what I was saying. I'm not huge on Rice but it seems like it will play out this season that he will get a lot of work. Rice has looked good running the ball. Is he the star who will carry your team to the championship, no. He he be the most useful Ravens RB, probably.

Is this just the coach sticking it to McGahee the only way he really can for not participating prior to now? If McG establishes himself as still being the best of the bunch he will be back with the 1st team when it counts - doesn't answer the question if he is the best of the bunch though does it?

I don't think so. As a new incoming head coach...with a rookie Qb at the helm, you have to want to have one rb that will carry the rock and protect that rookie Qb. I think last year he realized what Buffalo knew....McGahee just can't be counted on to stay healthy. It is why they took Rice last year...to take load off...and when Rice was dinged up..they gave it to McClain.

If Rice can handle it...he will take over...and McGahee will be phased out. IMO

You could be right - Buffalo has gotten rid of 2 now (McG and Henry) at a time when they still had value but on the verge of a decline/departure from the league.

  • Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston expects Ravens FB/RB Le'Ron McClain to keep short-yardage duties, despite his switch to full-time fullback. The Ravens might keep a backup fullback on the roster to use in front of McClain on the goal line.

Ravens | Could McGahee be released? Wed Jun 10, 08:46 AM
Mike Preston, of The Baltimore Sun, reports if they could, the Baltimore Ravens possibly would fast-forward RB Willis McGahee's exit out of town as he has been a disappointment since signing a seven-year, $40 million contract in March 2007.

  • -- Le’Ron McClain Heavy, But in Good Shape --
    Wed Jun 10, 2009 --from FFMastermind.com
  • The Carroll County Times reports Baltimore Ravens FB Le'Ron McClain, the team's leading rusher last season, is carrying some excess poundage. Last season, McClain reported to training camp at 278 pounds and flunked the team's conditioning test. Although McClain looks heavier than usual, HC John Harbaugh stressed that McClain is in better shape than he looks and the team isn't concerned. "He's worked really hard," Harbaugh said. "He's probably 10 or 12 pounds heavier than he'll be when we play, but he's also in great shape. So, although he's carrying a lot of weight, cardiovascular and strength-wise, he's in really good shape. Now, he's got to maintain that and build on that, take the weight off for training camp and he should be ready to go, but I admire the way he's worked this year."

Ravens | McGahee had two offseason surgeries Wed Jun 10, 06:37 PM
Agent Drew Rosenhaus said on his Twitter page that Baltimore Ravens RB Willis McGahee (knee, ankle) needed surgery on both his knee and ankle during the offseason.
Our view: First it was speculated to be knee surgery, then it was revealed that to be ankle surgery - and now it comes out that both body parts needed surgery. Perhaps Mike Preston from the Baltimore Sun wasn't too far off when he speculated that the Ravens may just cut the injury prone back.
